ʿAbd Allāh b. Yaḥyā al-Haḍramī (Arabic: عبدالله بن یحیی الحَضرَمي) was a companion of 'Ali b. Abi Talib (a). A member of Shurtat al-Khamis, he attended the Battle of Jamal. Following the Peace Treaty between Imam al-Hasan (a) and Mu'awiya, 'Abd Allah was martyred by the order of Mu'awiya. The martyrdom of 'Abd Allah b. Yahya was addressed by Imam al-Hasan (a) in a scathing letter he wrote to Mu'awiya, denouncing his wrongdoings and breaking his pledges as stated in the Peace Treaty.

Name and Lineage

It is said 'Abd Allah b. Yahya al-Hadrami was from Hadhramaut, a region in Yemen. His name is stated as 'Abd Allah b. Bahr[1] and 'Abd Allah b. Nujayy[2] in historical accounts as well. Abu l-Rida[3] or Abu l-Radi[4] was the teknonym of 'Abd Allah.

Yahya al-Hadrami, the father of 'Abd Allah was also a companion of Imam 'Ali (a) and a member of Shurtat al-Khamis.[5] He accompanied Imam (a) in the Battle of Siffin.[6]

In the Time of 'Ali b. Abi Talib (a)

'Abd Allah was a member of Shurtat al-Khamis in the time of Imam 'Ali's (a) caliphate.[7] In historical reports it is said he attended the Battle of Jamal. It is narrated that Imam (a) told 'Abd Allah: "Oh, 'Abd Allah, you and your father are truly members of Shurtat al-Khamis; Prophet Muhammad (s) told me about you and your father who are members the Shurtat al-Khamis. God called you by means of his Prophet (s) members of Shurtat al-Khamis."[8]

Martyrdom

After the martyrdom of 'Ali b. Abi Talib (a), 'Abd Allah was always sad; he mentioned the virtues of Imam 'Ali (a).[9] Ziyad b. Abih informed Mu'awiya about 'Abd Allah's affection toward 'Ali b. Abi Talib (a) then Mu'awiya ordered his men to kill him and his supporters.[10]

'Allama Amini has narrated in his book, Al-Ghadir, from al-Muhabbar that Ziyad crucified 'Abd Allah on the door of his house in Kufa.[11] According to the critical letter of Imam al-Husayn (a) to Mu'awiya, Ziyad eventually mutilated 'Abd Allah's body.[12]

Reaction of Imam al-Hasan (a) and Imam al-Husayn (a)

As al-Shaykh al-Saduq has narrated from al-Furuq bayn al-abatil wa l-huquq, when Mu'awiya violated the Peace Treaty, Imam al-Hasan (a) sent a letter to him and mentioned his wrongdoings; at first he mentioned the martyrdom of 'Abd Allah b. Yahya al-Hadrami.[13]

Imam al-Husayn (a) also sent a critical letter to Mu'awiya and condemned the order of murdering 'Abd Allah.[14]

Narrating Hadiths

Al-Shaykh al-Tusi regarded 'Abd Allah b. Yahya among the narrators of Imam 'Ali (a).[15] There are hadiths narrated by 'Abd Allah and his father, Yahya al-Hadrami, from 'Ali b. Abi Talib (a) in Shi'ite and Sunni hadith books.[16]
