Lineage, Birth and Martyrdom

'Abd al-Rahman was the son of 'Aqil b. Abi Talib and according to a report from al-Tabari his mother was a slave woman.[4]

'Abd al-Rahman was the son-in-law of Imam 'Ali (a) like Muslim b. 'Aqil and Ja'far b. 'Aqil.[5]. His wife was called Khadija[6]. He was so tall that Lubab al-ansab narrated he was nicknamed as "the spear of 'Aqil family"[7].

There is very little information available about his birth and age. The author of Lubab al-ansab reported that he was 35 when he was martyred.[8]

'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Aqil b. Abi Talib was a companion of Imam al-Husayn (a) and was martyred in Karbala on 'Ashura'[9]. al-Tabari narrated that he was martyred by 'Uthman b. Asir al-Juhani.[10] In another part of Tarikh al-umam wa l-muluk, Al-Tabari reported that 'Abd al-Rahman was attacked and martyred by 'Uthman b. Khalid b. Asir al-Juhani and Bishr b. Sawt al-Hamadani al-Qabidi[11].

al-Shaykh al-Mufid reported in al-Irshad that he was attacked and martyred by 'Uthman b. Khalid al-Hamdani.[12]

Also, the author of Akhbar al-tiwal narrated that 'Abd al-Rahman b. 'Aqil was attacked and martyred by an arrow shot by 'Abd Allah b. 'Urwa al-Khath'ami.[13]

His Fight and Rajaz

According to Ibn Shahr Ashub in his book al-Manaqib, 'Abd al-Rahman entered the battlefield while he was reciting this rajaz[14]:

My father is 'Aqil, so know my position.

I am from Hashim and Banu Hashim are my brothers.

They are honest people and masters of others. This is al-Husayn, steadfast and with solid beliefs.

He is the leader of the elderly and the young.

After that he killed 17 soldiers, he was martyred by 'Uthman b. Khalid al-Juhani.

Al-Ziyarah al-Nahiya and al-Ziyarah al-Rajabiyya
