Al Abi Rafi'

Āl Abī Rāfiʿ (Arabic:آل ابي رافع) was a great Shiite family whose ancestors was among the first people who converted to Islam. The founder of the family was Abu Rafi', one of the Prophet Muhammad (s)'s Sahaba who emigrated to Abyssinia together with Ja'far b. Abi Talib. After the demise of the Prophet (s), he was a companion of Imam 'Ali (a) and Imam al-Hasan (a).

Founder

The founder of the family was the well-known Sahabi, Abu Rafi', a slave who was emancipated by the Prophet (s). Al-Najashi[1] considered him among the righteous predecessors.

Biography

He was among people who emigrated to Abyssinia together with Ja'far b. Abi Talib in order to avoid being oppressed by the unbelievers of the Quraysh. After his migration to Medina, Abu Rafi' attended all the battles. After the demise of the Prophet (s), he accompanied Imam 'Ali (a) and together with the Imam (a), he moved to Kufa.[2] On one account, Abu Rafi' was alive until the period of Imam al-Hasan (a). After the martyrdom of Imam 'Ali (a), he returned to Medina together with Imam al-Hasan (a).

Other figures of the family who are mentioned in books of rijal include the following:

  • His sons, Muhammad, 'Awn, 'Abd Allah, and Fadl
  • His grandsons, 'Abd al-Rahman b. Muhammad and 'Abd Allah ('Ubayd Allah) b. 'Ali

'Ubayd Allah b. Abi Rafi'

'Ubayd Allah b. Abi Rafi' was one of the Tabi'un. According to al-Shaykh al-Mufid,[3] he was a prominent Shi'a and a special companion of Imam 'Ali (a) and his secretary. He attended the Imam's (a) battles. He is probably the first person in the history of Islam who wrote a book concerning rijal.

'Ali b. Abi Rafi'

He was a special companion of Imam 'Ali (a) and attended all of the Imam's (a) battles. He studied fiqh (jurisprudence) with the Imam (a).
