Āmina Baygum Majlisī (Persian: آمِنَه بَیْگُم مجلسي) or Āmina Khātūn (آمِنَه خاتون) was a female religious scholar in the Safavid period. She was the daughter of Muhammad Taqi al-Majlisi, the sister of al-'Allama al-Majlisi, and the wife of Mulla Salih Mazandarani. Amina Baygum helped al-'Allama al-Majlisi in the collection of hadiths for Bihar al-anwar. Her work includes books such as a commentary on Ibn Malik's Alfiyya, a commentary on al-Suyuti's al-Shawahid, and a collection of jurisprudential issues.

Biography

Amina Baygum, or Amina Khatun, was the daughter of the first al-Majlisi and the sister of al-'Allama al-Majlisi.[1] Authors take her to be renowned for her scholarship and vast knowledge.[2]

'Abd Allah al-Afandi, the author of Riyad al-'ulama' wa hiyad al-fudala' who was almost contemporaneous with Amina Baygum, characterizes her as a pious and knowledgeable scholar.[3]

The name of Amina Baygum's mother is not mentioned in sources. The only thing it is known about her is that she was the daughter of Sadr al-Din Muhammad al-Husayni al-'Ashuri al-Qummi.[4]

The years of her birth[5] and death are not mentioned in sources,[6] but it is said that she died in the twelfth/eighteenth century.[7]

Amina Baygum passed away in Isfahan and was buried in Takht-i Fulad cemetery.[8] According to other scholars, she was buried elsewhere.[9]

Husband and Children

Amina Khatun married Mulla Salih Mazandarani at her father's suggestion.[10] Mulla Salih was a student of Muhammad Taqi al-Majlisi.[11] He wrote many books, including a commentary on al-Kafi.[12] Amina Khatun and Mulla Salih had six sons all of whom became religious scholars.[13] They also had one or two daughters.[14]

Al-Wahid al-Bihbahani and Ayatollah Burujirdi were from the progeny of Amina Baygum and Mulla Salih Mazandarani.[15]

Scholarly Position

Amina Khatun was a student of her father, Muhammad Taqi al-Majlisi, and her brother, al-'Allama al-Majlisi.[16]

It is said that she wrote some books, including:

  • A commentary on Ibn Malik's Alfiyya
  • A commentary on al-Suyuti's al-Shawahid
  • A collection of jurisprudential issues
  • A collection of poems.[17]

Amina Khatun assisted her brother, al-'Allama al-Majlisi, in the collection of hadiths for some volumes of Bihar al-anwar.[18] It is also said that her husband, Mulla Salih Mazandarani, consulted her when he tried to figure out some parts of al-'Allama al-Hilli's book, Qawa'id al-ahkam.[19]
