His father, al-Shaykh Sharif, was a scholar in Najaf, and his grandfather was al-Shaykh Mahdi al-Qarashi.[1] Qarsh or Qarash was a well-known family in Najaf. He was from Shams area in Kut, from a tribe from Ja'afira. People who go to Najaf from these regions were called "al-Qarashi."[2]

They then studied Mukhtasar al-bayan with al-Shaykh 'Abbas al-Muzaffar, principles of jurisprudence with al-Shaykh Bashir al-'Amili, and al-Lum'a with al-Sayyid Musa al-Ba'aj. After then, al-Shaykh Baqir studied Fara'id al-usul with al-Sayyid Mahmud al-Mar'ashi and Kifayat al-usul with al-Shaykh Muhammad Tahir Al al-Shaykh al-Radi. According to al-Qarashi, he attended advanced lectures of Ayatollah al-Khoei for twenty years, and his notes from Ayatollah al-Khoei's lectures are preserved in the Library of al-Imam al-Hasan.[3]

Scholarly and Political Activities

According to Baqir Sharif himself, during the government of Abd al-Karim Qasim, communist thoughts were being propagated, as proponents of communism held seminars and conferences. Thus, he and other scholars and seminary students held speeches, circulated statements, and wrote books such as al-Nizam al-siyasi fi l-Islam (the political system in Islam), al-Nizam al-ijtima'i fi l-Islam (the social system in Islam), al-'Amal wa huquq al-'amil fi l-Islam (action and the rights of the agent in Islam), Fi anzimat al-hukm wa l-idara (on organizations of ruling and administration), which were welcomed by people, some were translated into English, and are taught in some academic centers.[5]

In that period where there was heavy censorship imposed on publishers, he decided to leave Iraq and migrate to a country where he could continue his political, scholarly, and cultural activities.[6]
