Ḍarghāma b. Mālik al-Taghlibī (Arabic: ضَرْغامة بن مالِک التَغْلِبی) (d. 61/680) is one of the martyrs of Karbala who went to Karbala after the martyrdom of Muslim b. 'Aqil and joined the army of Imam al-Husayn (a). He was martyred on the day of 'Ashura.

Lineage

He is known as "al-Taghlibi" because of his attribution to Banu Taghlib.[1] Banu Taghlib was a tribe originating from Taghlib b. Wa'il b. Qasit.[2] Al-Shaykh al-Tusi referred to him as a companion of Imam al-Husayn (a) without mentioning his attribution to the Banu Taghlib tribe.[3]

The Event of Karbala

Darghama b. Malik was one of the Kufan Shi'as who pledged allegiance to Muslim b. 'Aqil. After Muslim's martyrdom, since the ways out of Kufa were blocked, he disguised as the enemy's clothes and left Kufa in their company.[4] He then joined Imam al-Husayn (a) in Karbala.

On the day of 'Ashura, he injured and killed some enemies during the battle.[5] He was martyred in the first battle on 'Ashura,[6] and on another account, he was martyred after the Noon Prayer.[7] It is said that he declaimed the following during the battle:

Prepare for Malik Dargham
The blow of a young man who defends dignified people
He hopes for a full reward from God[8]
The Exalted, the Owner, and the Omniscient.[9]

Peace is sent to him in the Ziyarah al-Shuhada'[10] as well as in al-Ziyarah al-Rajabiyya for Imam al-Husayn (a)[11] as this: "peace be upon Darghama b. Malik".
