Ḥayāt al-Imām al-ʿAskarī; dirāsa taḥlīlīyya tarīkhīyya ʿilmiyya li-ḥayāt al-Imām al-Ḥasan al-ʿAskarī (Arabic: حَیاةُ الامامِ العَسْکَری؛ دراسَة تَحْلیلیّة تاریخیّة عِلْمیّه لِحیاةِ الامامِ الحَسَنِ العَسْکَري; literally: the life of Imam al-'Askari; an analytic historical scholarly research about the life of Imam al-Hasan al-'Askari) is a book in Arabic written by Muhammad Jawad Murawwiji Tabasi, in which an analysis of the life of Imam al-'Askari (a) from birth to martyrdom is offered.

Motivation for Writing

The author of the book says that he was motivated to write the book when a journal insulted Imam al-'Askari by claiming that he had no position or virtue except being the father of Imam al-Mahdi. Thus, he decided to write the book in response to the journal, explaining truths about his life.

Contents

The book is structured in two sections, amounting to twelve chapters overall:

  1. On the character and characteristics of the Imam (his name and lineage, Shiite and Sunni hadiths implying his imamate, his social place and significance, hadiths by the Imam, the Quranic exegesis attributed to Imam al-'Askari)
  2. On circumstances during the lifetime of the Imam (his stance towards those who cast doubts over his Imamate, his care for Shi'as and Alawis, the Zanj rebellion, the Imam's position concerning heresies and deviations, his position against caliphs of his time, a study of the time before and after his martyrdom).

Critique of the Book

The work has been criticized in the journal of Payam-i hawza in that it draws more on transmitted history than analytic history. Moreover, the book relies on inaccurate information, unreliable hadiths, and rumors. Muhammad Jawad Tabasi, the author of the book, has replied to the objections.

Publications

The book has been published by the Publications of the Islamic Propagation Office in Qom in 2000-1.
