Saʿd al-Dīn Abū l-Qāsim ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Niḥrir b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz b. Barrāj al-Ṭarābulusī (Arabic: سعدالدین ابوالقاسم عبدالعزیز بن نحریر بن عبدالعزیز ابن البَرّاج الطرابلسی) known as Ibn al-Barrāj (Arabic: ابن البراج) (b. about 400/1009-10 - d. 481/1088) was a Shi'a jurist and judge in the 5th/11th century. He was a student of al-Sharif al-Murtada and al-Shaykh al-Tusi.

Nicknames and Titles

He was also known as " 'Izz al-Din", "'Izz al-Mu'minin", "al-Halabi" and "al-Tarabulusi". His nickname (kunya) was "Abu l-Qasim" and he was titled as "Qadi" and "Sa'd al-Din"

Biography

He was born in Egypt. There is no report about his birth date, however by the help of sources reporting that he lived for 80 years, one can interfere that he was born about 400/1009-10.

He stared his educations in his hometown. After the demise of al-Sayyid al-Murtada in 436/1044 he participated in al-Shaykh al-Tusi class and studied for 7 year under him. Ibn Barraj was al-Tusi's constant companion until al-Shaykh al-Tusi appointed him as his representative in Syria region. He became one of the great scholars of the region and consequently was appointed as the judge of Tripoli (Tarabulus) by Jalal al-Mulk in 438/1046-7.

He passed away on the eve of Jum'a, Sha'ban 9th 481/October 28, 1088 in Tripoli and was buried there.
