Irshād al-adhhān ilā aḥkām al-īmān (Arabic: ارْشادُ الاذْهان إلی أحْکام الايمان) is an Arabic book written by al-'Allama al-Hilli (d. 726/1325). It is one of the best-known and most reliable sources of the Imami jurisprudence. Irshad al-adhhan is a book of fatwas concerning all issues of jurisprudence from tahara (cleanliness) to diyat (blood money). It was frequently cited by subsequent scholars.

Author

Abu Mansur Jamal al-Din Hasan b. Yusuf b. Mutahhar al-Hilli, known as al-'Allama al-Hilli, was a prominent Shi'a scholar in the seventh/thirteenth and eighth/fourteenth century. When al-Muhaqqiq al-Hilli, the Shi'a authority of the time, passed away in 676/1277, people referred to al-'Allama al-Hilli as the Shi'a authority. He was just twenty eight years old then. His debates and works led Oljaitu (Sultan Muhammad Khudabanda) to convert to Shiism and spread it throughout Iran. Al-'Allama al-Hilli wrote many books and essays concerning jurisprudence, principles of jurisprudence, principles of Islamic beliefs, philosophy, and logic.

Title of the Book

All scholars agree that the book's title is Irshad al-adhhan ila ahkam al-iman, but al-'Allama al-Majlisi and Sayyid Hasan al-Sadr referred to it as Irshad al-adhhan fi ahkam al-iman and Al-Shaykh al-Hurr al-'Amili referred to it as Irshad al-adhhan fi 'ilm al-iman.[1]

Motivation for Writing

Al-'Allama al-Hilli says in the preface of the book that his son, Muhammad, motivated him to write the book: "as God has made it obligatory for children to comply with their parents, He has also made it obligatory for the parents to be kind to their children and meet their legitimate requests".[2]

Significance

The book was until recently a textbook in Shi'a seminaries because of its significance for scholars of jurisprudence. Over fifty commentaries and expositions have been written on the book. A list of such commentaries is available in al-Dhari'a.
