Musnad Fāṭima al-Zahrāʾ (a) (Arabic: مسند فاطمة الزهراء) is a book in Arabic written by 'Aziz Allah 'Atarudi (d. 2014). In this book, the author cites hadiths transmitted from Fatima al-Zahra (a). The book includes her hadiths, a list of people who transmitted her hadiths, and a brief account of her life.

Author

'Aziz Allah 'Atarudi (b. 1307 sh/1928-9 - d. 1393 sh/2014) was Shiite author and wrote many books concerning hadiths, history, geography, philology, and bibliography.[1] He studied in seminary schools of Quchan,[2] Mashhad, Tehran, and Najaf.[3] He published volumes concerning the chains of transmitters of hadiths from Ahl al-Bayt (a),[4] as well volumes concerning the culture of Khorasan and the culture of Sistan. 'Atarudi traveled to different countries for his scholarly purposes. He died in Tehran on July 25, 2014, at the age of eighty six. His funeral was held in Tehran and Mashhad, and he was then buried in the Shrine of Imam al-Rida (a).

The Meaning of Musnad

The translator of the book says that "musnad" in the title of the book means hadiths and sayings attributed to Fatima al-Zahra (a). Thus, hadiths about Fatima al-Zahra (a) which are said by the Prophet Muhammad (s) or Infallible Imams (a) are beyond the scope of the book.[5]

Motivation for Writing

In his introduction to the book, the translator quotes the author as saying that ideas of writing the book go back to the time when he was preparing a book about life, virtues, and other aspects of Fatima al-Zahra (a). At that time, the author had adequately collected hadiths in Shiite and Sunni sources and then wrote translations and expositions for those hadiths. Since that other book included a chapter concerning the sayings of al-Siddiqa al-Kubra (a), some of the author’s friends suggested that the chapter be independently published. Thus, the author searched more for hadiths and sayings of Fatima al-Zahra (a) and turned it into an independent book.[6]

Contents

The book is structured into three chapters:

  • Second chapter: hadiths from Fatima al-Zahra (a) concerning principles, rulings, and traditions.
  • Third chapter: people who transmitted hadiths from Fatima (a), and short biographies of them.[7]

Publication

Musnad Fatima al-Zahra was first published in 1412/1991-2 in Tehran in Atarud Publications.[8]
