Nahj al-saʿāda fī mustadrak Nahj al-balāgha (Arabic: نَهْجُ السّعادَة فی مُسْتَدْرَك نَهج‌ُالبلاغة) compiled and written by Muhammad Baqir Mahmudi, is an encyclopedia of remarks by Amir al-Mu'minin (a). It contains over five hundred hadiths, three hundred letters, 119 supplications, eighty one wills, aphorisms, as well as poems attributed to Imam Ali (a).

Sources of all Islamic sects and denominations have been cited and consulted in the compilation of the book. In comparison with similar books, it counts as the most comprehensive collection of remarks by Imam Ali (a). It cites chains of transmitters and sources, and is the result of the author's survey of thousands of published books and manuscripts within half a century.

The Author

Muhammad Baqir Mahmudi (1302-1385 sh/1923-4 -2006) was born in Alamarvdasht near Shiraz. He studied in seminaries of Najaf since he was nineteen. He wrote thirty three books in fifty four volumes concerning Ahl al-Bayt (a).

The Structure

Nahj al-sa'ada fi mustadrak nahj al-balagha is structured into six parts. The first part contains sermons; the second contains letters; the third contains supplications; the fourth contains wills; the fifth contains aphorisms; and the sixth contains poems attributed to Imam 'Ali (a). The parts are organized both in terms of their subject-matters and chronologically. The author tries to chronologically organize the remarks by Imam 'Ali (a), and at the end of each part, he cites remarks with unknown dates.

Contents

In comparison with other similar books, the book is the most comprehensive collection of remarks by Imam Ali (a) in which information about their sources is mentioned. It contains over six thousand hadiths. In 1998, the book was selected as the Islamic Republic of Iran's Book of the Year. Morteza Motahhari refers to Nahj al-sa'ada fi mustadrak nahj al-balagha as the most elaborate and the most comprehensive collection of the documents of Nahj al-balagha. According to Mutahhari, the book is more comprehensive than Nahj al-balagha compiled by al-Sayyid al-Radi.

The book contains over five hundred sermons, including the dot-less sermon with its different chains of transmitters. It contains nearly three hundred letters and 119 supplications. The book also contains eighty one wills.
