Practices of Ramadan

From WikiShia
Jump to: navigation, search

Recommended practices of the month of Ramadan are worships and practices that are mustahab or recommended, in hadiths, to do in the month of Ramadan. Some of these practices are common to all days of Ramadan and some are specific to certain days.

Common Practices

Reciting the Qur'an

The best practice during the days and the nights of Ramadan is to recite the Qur'an. Although it is rewarding to recite the Qur'an any time, it is much more rewarding to recite it in the month of Ramadan, sine it is, according to hadiths, "the spring of the Qur'an" and the divine reward for reciting one Qur'anic verse in this month equals to reciting the whole Qur'an in other months. One traditional practice of Muslims in this month is the recitation of one thirtieth of the Qur'an every day, until the whole Qur'an is recited at the end of the month.

Giving Iftari to Others

One traditional practice of Muslims in the month of Ramadan is to give iftari (a meal to end the fasting]] to people who fast. The divine reward for this is greater than the reward for the fasting of the host him or herself. And more interestingly, the divine reward for accepting an invitation to the iftari is greater than 70 days of fasting by the guest. In accordance with the Prophet's (s) tradition, the iftar is served with dates. The special cookie served by Iranians for iftar is Jalebi (Zulbiya) and Bamiyeh.

Here are the other recommended practices in Ramadan, according to hadiths:

Time Ritual
Sahar (Dawn)
Everyday supplications
  • Reciting the following supplication:
O Allah, Lord of Ramadan

in which You sent down the Qur'an
and made fasting obligatory on Your servants
Bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad
and enable me to go for pilgrimage to Your sacred House
in this year and in every year
and forgive me those great sins (that I carry)
for surely, none can forgive them except You
O Beneficent, O All-Knowing.

  • Reciting the following supplication:
Glory be to Allah, the Creator of the breath of life. Glory be to Allah, the Illustrator.
Glory be to Allah, who created all the pairs, male and female. Glory be to Allah, who fixed the time of darkness and light.
Glory be to Allah, who splits the grain of corn and the date-stone (for sprouting). Glory be to Allah, the Creator of all things.
Glory be to Allah, the Creator of that which is seen and that which is unseen. Glory be to Allah, whose Words spread out far and wide.
Glory be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. Glory be to Allah, it is He who is the hearer.
There is nothing more hearing than He. He hears from the high 'Arsh that which (is spoken), down below the seven heavens, on the earths, He hears that which (is spoken) in the darkness of the land and the sea.
He hears the sighings and the complaints. He hears the worshipers and secret thoughts.
He hears the diabolical suggestions the devil puts into the mind, and voices (countless at a time) do not confuse His hearing.

Indeed Allah and His angels bless the Prophet; O you who have faith! Invoke blessings on him and invoke Peace upon him in a worthy manner ...

  • Reciting the following 100 times:
Glory be to He who can (at His will) expose (anyone) to loss or gain. Glory to be He who decides justly. Glory to be the Highest High. Glory be to Him. Glory to be Him. You are the Mighty Lord, who has none like Him, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.
This is a month which You have made; exalted, honored, ennobled and excelled over the other months.
It is the month in which You have made fasting obligatory on me, and it is the month of Ramadan,
in which You sent down the Qur'an, a guidance for mankind, having clear signs of guidance and distinction. (2:185)
You have placed in it the night of power, and made it better than a thousand months. (97:2)
O One who favours, and none favours You, favour me by saving me from the fire, amongst the ones You favour,
and make me enter Heaven, by Your mercy, O the most Merciful.

  • Reciting the supplication:
O Allah unlock the doors of understanding, through the Holy Qur'an, so that my heart and mind know the truth, my body regulates its movements, my wisdom sees the light, my speech and expression become fluent and rational, and let it be like that till I am alive, for verily there is no power and no strength with any one but Thee
  • Reciting the supplication:

Short Daily Supplications

Main article: Ramadan Daily Du'as

One common daily practice among Shiites in the Ramadan is the recitation of short supplications specific to each day of Ramadan. They are usually recited after obligatory prayers.

Recommended Prayers

In addition to prayers that are recommended (mustahab) or obligatory in other months of the year, such as the 5 daily obligatory prayers as well as nawafil and the night prayer, there are prayers that are specifically recommended for the Ramadan. Some of these are recommended to be said every night and some are specific to a particular day or night of the Ramadan. There are specifically recommended prayers for the nights of Laylat al-Qadr.

Farewell to the Ramadan

For people who are used to worships in this month, it is difficult to say goodbye to it, since it is the end of the God's banquet. There is a supplication cited from Imam al-Sajjad (a) as a farewell to the Ramadan (See The 45th Supplication of al-Sahifa al-Sajjadiyya). In this supplication, the Imam (a) salutes the Ramadan and counts it as the greatest month of God, the most precious time of the year, and an honorable companion. There is also a supplication cited from Imam al-Sadiq (a) as a farewell to the month of Ramadan (See Supplication of Farewell to Ramadan (by Imam al-Sadiq)).
