Shawdhab Mawlā Shākir (Arabic:شَوذَب مَولیٰ شاکِر) was among the martyrs of Karbala and the one who delivered the letter of Muslim b. 'Aqil to Imam al-Husayn (a). He went with the caravan of Imam al-Husayn (a) from Mecca to Karbala. On the Day of 'Ashura, he was martyred after Hanzala b. As'ad al-Shibami. His name is mentioned in the Ziyaras of Rajabiyya of Imam al-Husayn (a)[1] and Ziyara al-Shuhada.

Before the Event of 'Ashura

Shawdhab was the servant of Shakir.[2] In Ansar al-Husayn (a), Muhammad Mahdi Shams al-Din has mentioned him the servant of Shakir b. 'Abd Allah al-Hamdani al-Shakiri[3] and Mulla Husayn Wa'iz Kashifi mentioned him as the servant of 'Abis b. Abi Shabib al-Shakiri;[4] but, some contemporary scholars believe that Shawdhab was an ally of 'Abis and his tribe, not his servant.[5]

He was a memorizer of hadiths and transmitted hadiths from Imam Ali (a).[6]7 He and 'Abis b. Abi Shabib al-Shakiri delivered the letter of Muslim b. 'Aqil from Kufa to Imam al-Husayn (a) in Mecca and accompanied Imam (a) from Mecca to Karbala.[7]

His Martyrdom

On the Day of 'Ashura, 'Abis told Shawdhab, "what do you want to do?" Shawdhab answered, "I will defend the son of the Prophet (s) beside you." 'Abis said, "and nothing else was expected from you. If I had anyone dearer than you today, I would send him to the battlefield before I would go."[8]

He was martyred in the afternoon of 'Ashura after Hanzala b. As'ad al-Shibami.[9]
