Prayer

Zīyāra ʿĀshūrā (the non-famous version) (Arabic: زيارة عاشوراء غير المشهورة) is among ziyaras of Imam al-Husayn (a) recited on the day of Ashura' and other occasions, which is lesser-known than ziyara Ashura' (the well-known version).

The merits of the recitation of this ziyara is the same as the well-known ziyara Ashura'. It has differences with the well-known ziyara 'Ashura including that it does not have a hundred curses and greetings.

The Source

This ziyara is transmitted from the book, Mazar-i qadim, and its transmitter is 'Alqama b. Muhammad al-Hadrami who transmitted it from Imam al-Baqir (a). In Mafatih al-Jinan, Shaykh Abbas Qummi mentioned it after the well-known ziyara Ashura' and before Ziyarat al-Arba'in.

Merits

The lesser-known ziyara 'Ashura is a ziyara text for Imam al-Husayn (a) recited on the day of Ashura' and other occasions. It is said that the merits for its recitation is the same as the well-known ziyara Ashura'. According to Shi'a hadiths, recitation of ziyara Ashura' leads to elimination of one's sins and promotion of his position in the paradise. Also, whoever recites ziyara Ashura' is like those who were martyred fighting in the army of Imam al-Husayn (a) and receive a share of the merits of the martyrs of the Battle of Karbala and the rewards of all the prophets (a) and anyone who has visited the grave of Imam al-Husayn (a) since his martyrdom. This ziyara is for those who want to visit and say greetings to Imam al-Husayn (a) from a long distance; while their rewards will be the same as the rewards of a person who visits Imam al-Husayn (a) from near.

Manners of Recitation

One of the manners of the recitation of the lesser-known ziyara Ashura' is that the reciter should first perform ghusl, then go to the desert or on the roof and perform two rak'as of prayer (and recite Sura al-Tawhid in the second rak'a). Then, he must turn toward Karbala and recite the ziyara texts.

Content

The lesser-known ziyara 'Ashura begins with several greetings to Imam al-Husayn (a). Some of its content are as follows:

Greetings to the martyrs of the Battle of Karbala

Curse and denouncement of those who made the Battle of Karbala and their followers

Asking God for giving the reciter the opportunity of avenging (for the martyrs) in the rising of Imam al-Mahdi (a)

Wishing the accompany of the Ahl al-Bayt (a) in the hereafter

Greetings to the Five, (the Prophet (s), Imam Ali (a), Lady Fatima (a), Imam al-Hasan and Imam al-Husayn (a))

Praying for the intercession of Imam al-Husayn on the Judgment Day

Differences with the Well-known Ziyara Ashura'

In al-Shifa al-sudur, Mirza Abu l-Fadl Kalantar said that the lesser-known ziyara Ashura' has many differences with the well-known ziyara Ashura' and they cannot be considered one. Some of their differences are:

  • In the lesser-known ziyara Ashura', there is not a hundred curses and greetings. So, it takes less time to recite it and Muhaddith Qummi considered it a great opportunity for those who have an important job.
  • In the lesser-known ziyara Ashura', the name of 'Abbas (a) is mentioned while it is not mentioned in the well-known ziyara Ashura'.
