His teknonym is Abu Muhammad.[1] He was a seller of a kind of delicate cloth called Sabiri—hence the epithet Bayya' al-Sabiri (Sabiri Seller).[2]

His father was a companion of Imam al-Sadiq (a). He himself was a companion of Imam al-Kazim (a), and a companion and deputy of Imam al-Rida (a) and Imam al-Jawad (a).[3]

He passed away in 210/825-6 in Medina.[4]

Position

Safwan is praised in several hadiths. Imam al-Rida (a)[5] and Imam al-Jawad (a)[6] had a high regard for him. When Safwan passed away, Imam al-Jawad (a) sent special burial materials for him, and said that he was pleased with Safwan.[7]

Safwan is one of the people of consensus.[8] Al-Najashi has praised him as "trustworthy and noble".[9] Al-Shaykh al-Tusi mentions that the scholars of hadith regard Safwan as one of the most reliable people of his time and one of the most righteous and pious ones.[10]

There is only one hadith in which Safwan is allegedly cursed by Imam al-Jawad (a). Shi'a scholars of rijal believe that the hadith was said in a context of taqiyya (precautionary dissimulation).[11]

Teachers and Students

Safwan quoted hadith from forty companions of Imam al-Sadiq (a).[12] His name appears in the chains of transmission of 1100 hadiths.

He quoted hadith directly from Imam al-Kazim (a), Imam al-Rida (a), and Imam al-Jawad (a).[13]

A Fulfilled Promise

Safwan was a business partner with 'Abd Allah b. Jundub and 'Ali b. Nu'man. One day they made a pledge in al-Masjid al-Haram that whoever lives longer than the other two should pray, fast, and pay zakat on behalf of his deceased friends. 'Abd Allah and 'Ali passed away before Safwan, so he fulfilled his promise: he would pray 150 units of prayer (three times daily prayers), fast three months a year, and pay zakat three times every year.[18]
