Al-Yunusiyya Dhikr: Difference between revisions

'''Al-Yunusiyya Dhikr''' (Arabic:{{ia|ذکر الیونسیه}}) is the [[Prophet Jonah]]'s (a) supplication to rescue from the stomach of the fish. This supplication is mentioned in the [[sura al-Anbiya']], verse 87 and is recited in the first rak'a of [[Ghufayla prayer]]. It is narrated from the Prophet (a) that this supplication is the great name of God and if it is recited, God will answer it. Teachers of ethics and [[mysticism]] have emphasized about repeating this supplication especially in prostration.

As it is mentioned in the Qur'an<ref>Qurʾān, 37:139-148; 21:87; 10:98.</ref> and hadiths, the Prophet Jonah (a) (Yunus (a)) preached among his people for a while, but since they did not believe, cursed them, left them and went on a ship. God locked him in the stomach of a fish for his lack of perseverance; then, he (a) repented and made a supplication to be released.<ref>Qummī, ''Tafsīr al-Qummī'', vol. 1, p. 317.</ref> The glorious Qur'an has mentioned his supplication as follows:

" 'There is no god except You! You are immaculate! I have indeed been among the wrongdoers!' "<ref>Qur'an, 21:87.</ref>

In [[Shi'a]] and [[Sunni]] sources, it has been narrated from the [[Prophet (a)]] that this supplication is the [[Great name of God]] and if it is recited, God will answer it. Once a companion of the Prophet (a) asked him if this supplication was the only way of rescuing Prophet Jonah (a). The Prophet (a) referred to its next verse in the [[Qur'an]] saying that, "and thus do We deliver the faithful."<ref>Qur'an, 21:88.</ref> In another hadith from the Prophet (a), it has been emphasized that every Muslim who recites this supplication for the fulfillment of his request, God will fulfill his request.<ref>Jawrī Nayshābūrī, ''Qawāriʿ al-Qurʾān'', p. 25.</ref> It is transmitted from [[Imam al-Sadiq (a)]] that, "I will be surprised about someone who has a sadness and does not seek refuge to this verse of the Qur'an which says, "There is no god except You! You are immaculate! I have indeed been among the wrongdoers!", while after it, God continues that "We answered his prayer and delivered him from the agony and thus do We deliver the faithful."<ref>Ṣadūq, ''Man lā yaḥḍuruh al-faqīh'', vol. 4, p. 393.</ref>

Also verses 87 and 88 of chapter Anbiya' which are about the story of Prophet Jonah (a) and contain al-Yunusiyya supplication are recited in the first rak'a of Ghufayla prayer after reciting chapter al-Fatiha.
