Arman Aliwirdi

Ārmān ʿAlīwirdī (Persian: آرمان علی‌وردی) (b. 1380/2001 – d. 1401/2022) was a Shi'a seminary student and a member of the Basij in Tehran. He was tortured and martyred during the unrest of fall 1401/2022 in Tehran. The publication of videos showing his torture generated a wave of sympathy in the Iranian public sphere. He has been described as a "Martyr of Security" (Shahīd-i Amnīyat).

Sayyid Ali Khamenei, the Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, attributed Aliwirdi's killing to the incitement of Western media. Fourteen individuals were arrested as the main perpetrators of the incident. The primary suspect cited the influence of social media as his motive.

In January 2023, the Ofogh TV channel broadcast a documentary titled Ārmān-i ʿazīz (Dear Arman), covering his life and moral characteristics.

Position and Importance

Arman Aliwirdi was a Shi'a Basij seminary student from Tehran[1] who was tortured and killed during the unrest of 1401/2022.[note 1] The broadcasting of videos showing his torture by the assailants led to media coverage regarding him,[2] and his defenselessness among the attackers created a sense of sympathy among Iranians.[3] In the terminology of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Aliwirdi and individuals killed while maintaining security are referred to as "Martyrs of Security".[4]

Sayyid Ali Khamenei, the Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, called Aliwirdi one of the purest youths who was killed through torture, incitement, and training by Western media.[5] The City Council of Tehran renamed two streets in District 5, near his family's residence, after Arman Aliwirdi.[6]

Biography

Aliwirdi was born on July 4, 2001 (13 Tir 1380) in Tehran.[7] He was accepted into university for Civil Engineering but, according to his father, withdrew after one year due to his interest in seminary studies and entered the Seminary.[8] He was studying at the Ayatollah Mujtahidi Seminary in Tehran at the third level[9] and was a Basiji in the Imam Riza unit of the Muhammad Rasulullah Corps of Tehran.[10] Participation in Jihadi camps has been cited as one of his other activities.[11]

Martyrdom

On October 26, 2022 (4 Aban 1401), Aliwirdi was abducted by some protesters in the Ekbatan district of Tehran during the unrest. After being tortured and beaten with knives[12] and stones,[13] he was left on the roadside.[12] He was transferred to Baqiyatallah Hospital and attained martyrdom on October 28, 2022 (6 Aban 1401) at the age of 21 due to the severity of bleeding.[12] His appearance as a Basiji was stated as the reason for his abduction and torture.[14] Aliwirdi did not carry any cold or hot weapons while present during the unrest.[15] It is reported that during the torture, he was asked to insult Sayyid Ali Khamenei, but he refused.[16]

His funeral was held in Tehran on October 30, 2022 (8 Aban 1401),[17] and he was buried in Plot 50 of Behesht-i Zahra.[18][note 2]

Arrest of Perpetrators

On November 2, the Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, in a speech during a meeting with students, called for the identification and punishment of the perpetrators of Aliwirdi's martyrdom.[20] According to the report of the Tehran Police Commander, there were fifteen main agents involved in the torture and martyrdom of Aliwirdi,[21] fourteen of whom were detained by November 7, 2022 (16 Aban 1401).[22] The main suspect stated that his motivation for attacking Aliwirdi was being influenced by cyberspace.[23]

According to the spokesperson for the Judiciary on April 26, 2023 (6 Ordibehesht 1402), indictments were issued for eight of the detainees. Three of them were charged with Muharaba (waging war against God) and acting against national security, and the other five were charged with assembly and collusion against the security of the country.[24]
