Chindawol is a Shi'a region in west of Kabul,[1] Afghanistan which was called "half of Kabul" in the past, due to its vast area and considerable population.

There is no information about the exact date when Shi'a resided in Chindawol; but, based on the reports of foreign tourists between 1842 to 1846, Chindawol had 1500 to 2000 houses and several markets surrounded with tall walls at that time.[2] In 1978-9, some popular movements took place against the Communist government of Afghanistan in Chindawol which are known as Chindawol Uprising.[3]

The first residents of Kabul's Chindawol were Javanshir nomads.[4] Later, since early years of 14th/20th century, Qizilbash people who were Twelver Shi'a constituted the absolute majority of the residents of Chindawol.[5] However gradually, Hazaras gained the majority of the residents of these regions.[6] Haydar Quli Khan Sardar Kabuli, Shaykh Muhammad Rida Suhayl, Mir 'Ali Ahmad Hujjat and Aziz Allah Ghaznavi have been some of the scholars from Chindawol.[7]

Chindawol also has mosques and tekyehs,[8] including public tekyeh of Chindawol which is among the oldest tekyehs of Shi'a in Kabul and was built during the kingdom of Muhammad Nadir Shah, by Ahmad Kabuli known as Mir Ahmad 'Ali Hojjat in early 1930s.[9] Holding the first congregational prayer of Shi'a with open hands and also broadcasting the first Shi'a Adhan in Kabul were taken place in this tekyeh.[10]
