Aṣḥāb al-Imām Amīr al-Muʾminīn wa al-ruwāt ʿanh (Arabic: (أصحاب الإمام أمیرالمؤمنین) و الرواة عنه; Companions of Imam the Commander of the Faithful and Narrators from him) is a book written in arabic by Muḥammad Hādī al-Amīnī (d.2000). It is a biographical and historical research work that introduces 1,401 individuals among the companions and narrators of Imam Ali (a), comprising figures from both Shi'a and Sunni classifcation

The work is organized into two volumes and presents a concise account of the lives, ancestry birth, death, martyrdom, and intellectual and religious characteristics of individuals in alphabetical order. Drawing upon countless reliable sources, the author has determine to revive forgotten historical figures and provide an accurate image of the companions of Imam Ali (a). This work was published in 1992 by Dar al-Kitab al-Islami in Beirut.

General Introduction

The book Aṣḥab al-Imam Amir al-Muʾminin wa al-ruwat ʿanh is authored by Muḥammad Hai al-Amini, the eldest son of Allama Amini (the author of Al-Ghadir).[1] In this work, the author addresses the biographies of the companions of Imam Ali (a) and those who narrated hadith from him.[2] The author collected these individuals from among both Shi'a and Sunni sources and, arranging them alphabetically,[3] provided a brief description of their lives, lineage, birth, death, martyrdom, and their intellectual and principle characteristics.[4]

Content

According to a report published regarding this book, the author checked reliable sources in Rijal, hadith, and history to compile information regarding the companions and narrators of Imam Ali (a). The work follows the style of shortness common in Rijal writings; in some example , this concision may pose a difficulty in understanding the content for readers who lack sufficient knowledge with history.[5]

Reviews indicate that information regarding certain figures in this book is very limited, sometimes classified to a mere mention of the name or a brief reference. The compass of identity introduced in the book is broad ranging from the Imam's loyal companions such as 'Ammar b. Yasir, Abu Dharr al-Ghifari, Malik al-Ashtar, and Salman al-Farsi, to opponents and enemies such as Ibn Muljam al-Muradi, Shimr b. Dhi l-Jawshan, and Mu'awiya, and even individuals such as 'Umar b. al-Khattab, who in certain cases sought the Imam's benefit in resolving religious and governmental issues.[6]

Publication

This book was published in 1412/1992 by Dar al-Kitab al-Islami (Dar al-Ghadir lil-Maṭbuʿat) in Beirut and is arranged in two volumes.[7]

Structure

According to a report on the structure of Aṣḥab al-Imām Amir al-Muʾminin wa al-ruwat ʿanh, Muḥammad Hādial-Aminicompiled information on 1,401 companions and narrators of Imam Ali (a).[8] The paging is continuous across the two volumes. At the end of the second volume, a estensive bibliography and an index of names (tarajim) are provided, furtherance access to information for researchers.[9]

Based on this report, the sources used are cited within the sections, including precise references to the volume and page number of the books. In some cases, the number of sources for an entry reaches more than 45 titles.[10]

Introductions

The book consists of two introductions:

  • **First Introduction:** Short and cross a few pages, it covers the motivation for writing and a brief introduction to the book.[11] In this introduction, the author acknowledges the existence of thousands of narrators and companions whose names and works have been lost due to political and historical circumstances. He states his goal as serving truth, history, and knowledge by reviving these forgotten names and figures.[12] censure works that lack deep research and barely list narrator names and sources, he emphasizes that this work has been compiled using reliable Rijal sources.[13] He also points out the weakness of Rijal studies in some Arab countries and Iran, stressing the use of reliable sources in the fields of hadith, dirāya, and rijāl.[14]
  • **Second Introduction:** precise and approximately 40 pages long, it includes an examination of the characteristics of Imam Ali's (a) school of thought, an analysis of the Imam's scientific and honest personality from the perspective of Sunni scholars, a review of historical developments affecting the lives of the Imam's companions, and an analysis of Shia and Sunni Rijal perspectives regarding the Imam's narrators.[15]
