Imam Khomeini Education and Research Institute (Persian: مؤسسه آموزشی و پژوهشی امام خمینی) (est. 1995) is an academic and research center located in Qom, operating under the supervision of the Supreme Council of Islamic Seminaries. Its activities are sanctioned by the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution. Muhammad Taqi Misbah Yazdi served as the institute's president from its inception until his death in 2021, after which Mahmud Rajabi assumed the role. The institute's primary objective is to train students (seminary students) concurrently with their seminary studies, fostering research, compilation, and the explication of Islamic teachings. Educational programs are offered at the Bachelor's, Master's, and PhD levels across various disciplines.

History of Establishment

The institute's origins predate the Islamic Revolution of Iran, tracing back to the establishment of the educational wing of the "Dar al-Rah al-Haqq Institute" (Mu'assasa-yi dar rah-i haqq) in 1974.[1] In 1994, the institute's educational curricula were submitted to the Supreme Council of the Seminary and subsequently ratified. That same year, the programs were presented to the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution for official accreditation within the national higher education system, receiving approval on July 11, 1995.[2]

Seminary Status of the Institute

The Imam Khomeini Institute operates under the supervision of the Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran, in accordance with a statute approved by the Supreme Council of the Cultural Revolution. Admission is restricted to clerics and students of religious sciences, with activities aligned with the objectives of the Islamic Seminary. Both the board of trustees and the institute's president are appointed by the Supreme Leader.[3]

General Goals

According to the institute's statute, its founding objectives include:

From its establishment until 2021, the presidency was held by Muhammad Taqi Misbah Yazdi via decree of Sayyid Ali Khamenei.[5] Following his passing in January 2021, Mahmud Rajabi was appointed as the new president.[6]

Education Deputy

This division offers instruction in various fields of Islamic and human sciences[7] with authorization from Iran's Ministry of Higher Education. Degrees are awarded at the Bachelor's, Master's, and PhD levels. The curriculum is threefold, comprising: core seminary studies (Fiqh and Usul al-Fiqh), specialized humanities courses, and instruction in Quranic teachings and Islamic philosophy.[8]

Research Deputy

This deputy oversees research groups, the Encyclopedia of Rational Sciences, and textbook compilation units. The Library and Documentation Center operates under this division, housing a collection of works in Persian, Arabic, and English.[9] The institute's publishing arm, also under this deputy, releases works by researchers and faculty of Islamic sciences, including the works of Muhammad Taqi Misbah Yazdi.[10] Notable publications include Farhang-i a'lam-i 'ulum-i 'aqli, Kitabshinasi-yi tafsili-yi madhahib-i Islami, Maqtal-i jami'-i Sayyid al-Shuhada', and Sazman-i wikalat.
