The International Congress on Sayyid Murtaḍā ʿAlam al-Hudā was a conference commemorating the 1000th death commemoration of al-Sharif al-Murtada (355/966 – 436/1044), a Shi'a jurist and theologian of the 5th/11th century and the brother of al-Sharif al-Radi, the compiler of Nahj al-balagha. It was held in 2021 in Qom. In this congress, scholars examined and unveiled his scientific and personal dimensions, and works and articles related to Sayyid Murtada 'Alam al-Huda.

Who is Sayyid Murtada?

Ali b. al-Husayn b. Musa (355/966 – 436/1044), known as Sayyid Murtada, Sharif al-Murtada, and 'Alam al-Huda, was an Imam jurist, theologian, and an influential social figure of the Shi'a during the Buyid era. He left many works in jurisprudence, principles of jurisprudence, theology, and Quranic exegesis.[1]

Background of the Congress

The Sayyid Murtaḍa Congress was held with the aim of commemorating the 1000th anniversary of his death and explaining the scientific and social status of Sayyid Murtaḍa. According to Mahdi Mehrizi, the scientific secretary of the congress, research activities regarding Sayyid Murtaḍa began in 1436/2014, and until the holding of the congress in 1442/2021, numerous programs were carried out to introduce this international figure.[2]

Preliminary Meeting

The preliminary meeting of the International Congress on Sayyid Murtaḍa Alam al-Huda was held on 26 Rabiwul Awal 1437/January 7, 2016, at the Dar al-Hadith Scientific and Cultural Institute in Qom, where professors and researchers delivered speeches about this personality.[3] Also in this meeting, the commemorative stamp of Sayyid Murtaḍa was unveiled.[4]

Furthermore, the organizers of the commemoration congress met with Sayyid Ali Khamenei on 4th Safar 1437/November 16, 2015. In this meeting, the Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran considered Sayyid Murtaḍa Alam al-Huda as one of the prominent figures of Islamic history, a scientific pride, and an international Islamic personality, and emphasized the importance of correcting and publishing his works.[5]

In 2020 and 2021, several preliminary meetings were also held with the cooperation of the Islamic Research Foundation of Astan Qods Razavi and the Dar al-Hadith Institute.[6]

Holding the Congress

The International Congress and the unveiling ceremony of the works of Sayyid Murtaḍa Alam al-Huda were held on 13 Rajab 1442/February 25, 2021, coinciding with the birth anniversary of Imam Ali (a), at the Dar al-Hadith Scientific and Cultural Institute in Qom. In this ceremony, the speech of Sayyid Ali Khamenei from the meeting with the organizers in 1436/2015 was read, and a part of the video message of Ayatollah Jawad Amul was broadcast. Speeches was delivered at the congress by the custodians of Astan Qods Razavi, the Shrine of 'Abd al-Azim al-Hasani and Rida Ustadi.[7]

At the end of the conference, 60 works were unveiled, including 40 books belonging to Sayyid Murtaḍa Alam al-Huda and 20 volumes containing 150 articles related to him.[8]
