Mulla Qadir Husayn (Persian: ملا قادر حسین) (d. 1890s) was an Indian jurist and the founder of the first Khoja Ithna Asheri community in Mumbai. He was an Indian student studying in Karbala under Zayn al-Abidin Mazandarani. Following the request of a group of Khoja Ithna Asheri led by Dewji Jamal for a religious missionary, he was sent to Mumbai in 1873 by the order of Zayn al-Abidin Mazandarani.[1]
Mulla Qadir, with the cooperation of Dewji Jamal and other Khoja Ithna Asheris, founded the first congregation of this community in Mumbai. In addition to preaching and teaching Islamic sciences,[2] he published the book Chiragh-yi hidayat (Light of Guidance) in Gujarati, which was later distributed among Khoja Ithna Asheris communities in various countries.[3]
Although Mulla Qadir was not a Khoja himself, he was counted among them due to his pivotal role as the first cleric and missionary of this community.[4] He was threatened many times by Ismaili Khojas. According to reports, a person named "Kilu Khataw" was assigned to poison him; however, he refused to do so and joined Mulla Qadir.[5] He finally passed away in the 1890s.[6]
