Sayyid Muḥammad ʿAlī Mūsawī Jazāyʾirī (Persian: سید محمدعلی موسوی جزایری) is a Shi'a Faqih and Usuli of the 15th/21st century.[1] Jazayeri was the former Imam Jumu'a of Ahvaz (1982–2019),[2] the representative of Imam Khomeini (1982–1989)[3] and Sayyid Ali Khamenei (1989 –2019) in Khuzestan province,[4] and a member of the Assembly of Experts for Constitution (1979).[5] He has also been the representative of the people in the Assembly of Experts for six consecutive terms (since 1979)[6] and the head of Khuzestan Seminaries (since 2019).[7] He is a faithful defender of Wilayat al-Faqih (Guardianship of the Jurist) and, according to himself, was the first person to propose the principle of Wilayat al-Faqih in the Assembly of Experts for Constitution.[8]

It is stated that he revived the Seminary of Ahvaz and confirmed several seminaries for brothers and sisters in this city.[9] He is also the endower (Waqif) and custodian of the Amir al-Mu'minin (a) Seminary in Najaf.[10] Jazayeri played an active role in the victory of the Islamic Revolution of Iran and the Iran-Iraq War (in the Supreme Council of War).[11] His works include the books Taḥrir al-uṣul and a treatise on justice and fasting.[12]

Jazayeri, who is a descendant of Sayyid Ni'mat Allah al-Jaza'iri, was born in 1943-44 in Shushtar.[13] He began his seminary studies in Shushtar, studying under his father, his maternal uncle (Sayyid Muhammad Hasan Al-Tayyib), and Muhammad Taqi Shushtari.[14] He then migrated to Najaf and attended the advanced classes (dars kharij) of Imam Khomeini, Sayyid Abu l-Qasim al-Khoei, Sayyid Muhammad Baqir al-Sadr, Sayyid Ali al-Sistani, and Ali Gharavi Tabrizi.[15] In 1971, like other Iranians residing in Iraq, he was discharged from the country and benefited from the lessons of Muhammad Ali Araki and Vahid Khorasani in Qom.[16] From 1974, upon the invitation of the people of Ahvaz, Jazayeri went to that city and had an active and effective presence in the scientific, cultural, and social arenas of Khuzestan province.[17]
