Cognates of the word, "istidraj," appear in the [[Qur'an]] in the verse 182 of [[Sura al-A'raf]] and the verse 44 of [[Sura al-Qalam]], apparently used in its literal meaning: "But those who deny Our signs - We will progressively [or gradually] lead them [to destruction] from where they do not know." Exegetes believe that according to the tradition of istidraj, God does not quickly or immediately punish sinners.
