Atabat al-'Aliyat(العتبات العالیات) [literally: “Exalted Doorsteps”] are sometimes called Atabat. These “doorsteps” are holy cities for Shi'a in Iraq including Najaf, Karbala, al-Kazimiyya and Samarra. The importance of these cities is because of the six Imams (a) of Shi'a buried there. These cities are among major destinations of pilgrimage and holy cities for Shi'a.

These cities are also called A'tab al-Muqaddasah.

Najaf

Najaf al-Ashraf is located 10 km west of Kufa and the shrine of Imam Ali (a) is there. The seminary of Najaf is among the most Shia seminaries of the world.

Karbala

Karbala is the place of occurring the event of '''Ashura''. All the martyrs of the event are buried there. Most important shrines and graves of the city are the holy shrine of Imam Husayn (a) which is called Ha'ir al-Husayni, the shrine of Abu al-Fadl al-Abbas (a) and the grave of Ali Akbar (a) which is buried below Imam Husayn's (a) feet in his tomb.

Al-Kazimiyya

Al-Kazimiyya is located at the bank of Tigris toward Baghdad. This city is the where Imam Musa al-Kazim (a), the seventh Imam of Shia, and Imam al-Jawad (a), the ninth Imam of Shia are buried.

Samarra

Two other Imams of Shia are buried there: The tenth Imam of Shia, Imam al-Hadi (a) and Imam al-'Askari (a), the eleventh Imam of Shia.
