“Allahumm-a -l’an qatalat-a Amir al-Mu’minin (a)” (meaning: “O Allah, curse the killers of Amir al-Mu’minin (a)”) is a phrase mentioned in some ziyara texts of Imam Ali (a). Shaykh Abbas Qomi has mentioned reciting it one hundred times among the recommended practices for night of the 19th of Ramadan.
According to Ayatollah Khamenei, the plural form of the word “qatalata” (“killers”) indicates that in addition to Ibn Muljam, who struck Imam Ali with his sword, it also includes those who played a role in the creation of this incident; including: those who forced Imam Ali (a) to accept arbitration during the incident of Hakamiyya and others whose actions contributed to his martyrdom. Mohsen Qara’ati, a Shia cleric and exegete of the Qur’an, has also referred to the word “qatalata” as pointing to the movement, ideology, or group that Ibn Muljam represented. Elsewhere, he has said that the word “qatalata” is used to include those who were pleased with the killing of Imam Ali (a).
According to a fatwa response from Mirza Javad Tabrizi, reciting this prayer in the qunut and prostration of daily prayers is permissible.
