Al-Mashlūl Supplication (Arabic: دُعاء المَشلول) or "the supplication of al-Shab al-ma'khudh bi-dhanbih" (literal meaning: supplication of the youth stricken for his sin) is a supplication narrated from Imam Ali (a). Imam (a) taught this supplication to a young man whose hand was paralyzed due to a curse of his father and said that anyone who recites it whole-heartedly, his request will be answered.
Reference
"Mashlul" (Arabic: مشلول) means "a person a part of whose body has been paralysed."
Al-Sayyid b. Tawus has narrated this supplication through his own reference in Muhij al-da'awat.[1] Kaf'ami in Balad al-amin,[2] 'Allama Majlisi in Bihar al-anwar[3] and Shaykh 'Abbas Qummi in Mafatih al-jinan have quoted it.
This supplication has also been called the supplication of al-Shab al-ma'khudh bi-dhanbih. (literal meaning: supplication of the youth stricken for his sin)
Cause of Issuance
Imam al-Husayn (a) says that, "one night I was circumambulating around Ka'ba with my father, that we heard a young man's cry. My father sent me to find the person. I found a good-looking young man making supplication and lamentation. I took him to Imam (a). The young man told his story saying that,
'I was a wasteful man and my father was very sad for that. Once, I took his money without his permission and beat him. He became upset and when he came to Mecca, cursed me. That time, my hand became paralyzed and since then, for several years I asked my father for forgiveness until he accepted to come to Mecca again this year and ask my cure from God. But, he died on the way, and I arrived here alone.'
My father (a) gave the young man the good news that the time of his cure has come and taught him this supplication he (a) had learned from the Prophet (s) and mentioned the conditions required for his request to be fulfilled."[4]
The Message
The great part of this supplication is calling God with His Most Beautiful Names. The major emphasis of this supplication is over supplicating to God and making entreaty to Him through His Names and Attributes. And at the end, through asking Him by the right of some of His Names and mentioning some verses of the Holy Qur'an, the person asks his requests from Him and ends with asking God to send His blessings upon Muhammad (s) and his Household (a).
Imam Ali (a) said that the Great Name of God exists in this supplication.
In a hadith, it is mentioned that this supplication should not be recited without wudu.
