ʿAlī b. al-Ḥasan al-Ṭabrisī (Arabic: علی بن الحسن الطَبرِسی) was among Shi'a hadith scholars in 6th/12th century. He was son of al-Hasan b. al-Fadl, the author of Makarim al-akhlaq and the grandson of al-Fadl b. al-Hasan al-Tabrisi, the author of Majma' al-bayan commentary on the Qur'an. Some books have been attributed to him, the most important one of which is Mishkat al-anwar fi ghurar al-akhbar.

Birth and Demise

The dates of al-Tabrisi's birth and demise are not known, but with regards to the date his grandfather, al-Fadl b. al-Hasan al-Tabrisi passed away, which was 548/1153-4, and the high possibility that he met his grandfather, they mentioned the date of his demise about 600/1203-4. Aqa Buzurg mentioned him among the scholars of 7th/13th century.[1]

Lineage and Family

One of the important families of the Islamic period is al-Tabrisi family. The father of 'Ali b. al-Hasan was al-Hasan b. al-Fadl b. al-Hasan al-Tabrisi, the author of Makarim al-akhlaq who was considered among the best of his father's students. His great grandfather was Amin al-Islam al-Fadl b. al-Hasan al-Tabrisi, the author of the two commentaries of Majma' al-bayan and Jawami' al-jami' on the Qur'an.

In his biography, they have mentioned that he was the grandson of al-Fadl b. al-Hasan al-Tabrisi and this is mentioned in all biographical sources and books of rijal. However, some sources mentioned him as the "sibt" of al-Tabrisi and sibt means the son of the daughter. It is explicitly mentioned in Riyad al-'ulama that 'Ali b. al-Hasan was the grandchild of al-Fadl b. al-Hasan al-Tabrisi from his daughter.[2]

Teachers

The only name mentioned as his teacher in historical sources is al-Sayyid Jalal al-Din al-Musawi who was among the hadiths sources of al-Tabrisi. His father, al-Hasan b. al-Fadl, the author of Makarim al-akhlaq was also among his teachers.

Works

The book Mishkat al-anwar
  • Nathr al-la'ali
  • Kunuz al-najah on supplication: al-Sayyid b. Tawus in Muhaj al-da'awat and al-Mujtani cited from it and also al-Kaf'ami referred to it in Misbah. Thus, there is no doubt about the existence of the book and the only problem is about its attribution, as there is a high possibility that it has been written by al-Fadl b. al-Hasan al-Tabrisi, his grandfather.
  • Mishkat al-anwar: this is the only book which is available to us in full and has no problem regarding attribution. However, its main idea belonged to al-Tabrisi's father and after his demise, 'Ali prepared the book and published it with some additions and mentioned this point in its introduction.[3]
