Al-Jawhara fī nasab al-Imām ʿAlī wa ālih (Arabic: الجوهرة فی نسب الامام علی و آله) is a work by Muhammad b. Abi Bakr al-Tilmisani, a Sunni scholar of the 7th/13th century, introducing the personality of Amir al-Mu'minin (a) and the news and circumstances related to him. The author explains the family lineage of 'Ali b. Abi Talib (a) and then introduces his children, especially Imam al-Hasan (a) and Imam al-Husayn (a). Al-Tilmisani then proceeds to mention some of the human, moral, and spiritual virtues of Imam 'Ali (a) and speaks of his asceticism, piety, and worship. The author mentions some sermons, wisdoms, and wills of Amir al-Mu'minin regarding moral and worship issues, and at the end of the book, he describes the manner of his martyrdom at the hands of the Khawarij.

About the Author

Muhammad b. Abi Bakr 'Abd Allah al-Ansari al-Tilmisani, known as al-Birri, is not very well known. The editor of the book also expressed ignorance about his biography, except that he finished the book al-Jawhara in 645/1247. He says: "al-Tilmisani lived on the island of Menorca in Andalusia, and perhaps his place of residence caused us to remain uninformed about him. Al-Birri lived in the 7th/13th century and dedicated his book to the ruler of this small island."[1]

Name of the Book

The researcher of the book mentions its name as al-Jawhara fi nasab al-Nabi wa ashabih al-'ashara, but the publisher has only published the section on Imam Ali (a) and his two children. From the original title of his book, which he wrote about the lineage of the Ten Companions of the Prophet, it becomes clear that he is Sunni and believes in the ten to whom Paradise was promised[2]. Also, the researcher of the book mentions the reason for the obscurity of this work as the author's life in a small area far from Andalusia.[3]

Method of Writing and Content

Al-Tilmisani has reported his materials in the manner of hadith, citing chains of narrators and documents, and in most cases mentioning his sources. His sources include the Six Books (al-kutub al-sitta) of Sunni tradition and books like al-Kamil by al-Mubarrad and al-Isti'ab.[4]

In this book, after a brief explanation of the lives of Imam Ali (a) and Lady Fatima (a), he speaks of the circumstances of Imam al-Hasan (a) and Imam al-Husayn (a) and their virtues, and once again returns to the first Imam and speaks of his virtues and martyrdom. Among the opening contents of the book is a narration from Zayd b. Arqam that the Prophet (s) was appointed to prophethood on Monday and Ali (a) prayed with him on Tuesday.[5]
