Verse's Information
Juz'22
AboutThe people of Paradise not having sorrow

Qur'an 35:34 quotes the words of the people of Paradise who express their gratitude to God for removing grief and sorrow from their hearts.[1] According to exegetes, Qur'an 35:33 refers to the material blessings of the people of Paradise, and then in Qur'an 35:34, it mentions the spiritual and psychological blessings, including that grief and sorrow have been removed from the people of Paradise.[2]

The meaning of huzn (sorrow), due to the difference in its cause, has been considered multiple. In the Qur'an, huzn has sometimes been used in the meaning of sadness, such as the address to the mother of Moses,[3] sometimes in the meaning of anxiety of defeat, such as the address in Qur'an 3:139,[4] and sometimes in the meaning of fear, such as the fear of the great terror.[5][6] It has been narrated from the Prophet (a) that he said to Abu Dharr al-Ghifari that the world is the prison of the believer and the believer is sorrowful in the world.[7]

There are multiple narrations regarding huzn in Qur'an 35:34.[8] Some exegetes have considered this huzn to refer to worldly sorrows, while some consider it to refer to the sorrow in the gathering place of Resurrection concerning human actions.[9] Makarim Shirazi, a Shi'a scholar and exegete, considers both exegeses of the verse to be correct and believes the verse can include both cases.[10] Other exegetes have also considered the distress of the world and the Hereafter,[11] the elimination of whatever causes sorrow and the obtainment of whatever its existence eliminates sorrow[12] to be the intention of the verse.

Al-Tabarsi, a Shi'a exegete, has noted the point that this gratitude is for the elimination of grief and sorrow that individuals deserved and God removed it from them by His grace.[13]
