Al-Zuhhād al-Thamānīya (Arabic: الزهاد الثمانیه, lit. the eight ascetics) were eight famous ascetics in early Islam namely Amir b. Abd Qays, Hurm b. Hayyan, Rabi' b. Khuthaym, Uways al-Qarani, Abu Muslim al-Khulani, Masruq b. Ajda', Hasan al-Basri and Aswad b. Yazid[1].

In a hadith Rijal al-Kashshi mentioned, Fadl b. Shadhan only considered Amir b. Abd Qays, Hurm b. Hayyan, Rabi b. Khuthaym and Uways al-Qarani true ascetics and about Abu Muslim al-Khulani, Hasan al-Basri and Masruq b. Ajda mentioned some attributes such as being a hypocrite, a tax-collector of Mu'awiya and an opportunist[2]. Uways al-Qarani was considered the best of ascetics among Zuhhad Thamaniya[3]. Some of these ascetics were companions of Imam Ali (a)[citation needed].

Some sources mentioned Jarir b. Abd Allah al-Bajali instead of Aswad b. Yazid among Zuhhad Thamaniya[4].

In different sources, the names of Zuhhad Thamaniya are mentioned differently, including Hurm b. Hayyan which is mentioned Hurm b. Jaban[5], Rabi' b. Huthaym who has been recorded Rabi' b. Khuthaym[6] and Masruq b. Ajda' who is reported as Ajdha'[7]. Also, in some scripts, Aswad b. Yazid is mentioned as Barid or Barir[8].
