Hejrat Foundation is a non-profit religious, educational, and charitable organization, in Southern California. It serves the Shi'a Muslims for their religious ceremonies and practices. It manages several religious institutes including a mosque called "Masjid al-Nabi".
History
Hejrat Foundation was established under The Hejrat Educational Center in Southern California as a non-profit organization in 2000, and currently administrates several organizations. Masjid al-Nabi (s) is a mosque in West Covina, California , another masjid with the same name in Adelanto, CA, and a cemetery which is administrated under the organization name "United Islamic Youth Organization".
The cemetery in Adelanto serves the needs of all of Southern California, and beyond. It is the first and the largest cemetery in the United States that is in total accordance with Islamic law.[1]
Missions and Goals
The mission is to educate Muslims and non-Muslims about Islam; to build unity between all people; and to fill the needs of Muslims and non-Muslims in Southern California in order to improve their standard of living and assist in their economic advancement.
The goals include the establishment of mosques, Islamic seminaries (Hawza), full-time Islamic schools, weekend schools, libraries, Islamic banks, Islamic cemeteries, homeless shelters, free medical clinics, orphanages, domestic violence shelters, food banks, and other organizations and services to meet the needs of the growing Muslim population, and their non-Muslim neighbors.
Hejrat Foundation is currently working on organizing a Hawza, an Islamic Seminary. Hawza is a place where students can learn, in depth, about Islamic topics. The plans for Hawza call for it to be certified by the state of California for university credits, and to be certified by Hawza of Najaf and Qom.[2]
Programs
Regular programs are held to educate the community in religious, cultural, humanitarian, legal, national, and international issues. A wide range of speakers are invited from many different backgrounds to speak on the various topics of interest and need. The speeches are regularly included a part for questions and answers to maximize the learning opportunities.
A weekend school has established in order to better reach goals for teaching basic Islamic education to children from various ethnic groups and backgrounds in an environment where they come together and find their common ground, preparing them for a future of unity and cooperation.
In addition, it is expected to begin classes for adults; both those who want to learn about Islam at a basic level, and those who wish to pursue more advanced levels.[3]
