Representative of Imam Khomeini in Yazd and Imam of Friday Prayer of Yazd and Ardakan

Sayyid Rūḥ Allāh Khātamī (Persian: سید روح‌الله خاتمی) (b. 1906-07 - d. 1988) was a Shi'a jurist and a member of the first term of the Assembly of Experts of Iran.[1] He founded the Seminary of Ardakan and served as its the Imam of Friday prayer (1979 – 1982). Following the martyrdom of Muhammad Saduqi, he became the representative of Wali al-Faqih and the Imam of Friday prayer in Yazd (1982–1988). Khatami was a close friend of Imam Khomeini with a friendship that began in 1925.[2]

He was a fighter against the Pahlavi government[3] and one of the early supporters of Imam Khomeini's movement in Yazd and Ardakan.[4] From 1963 until the Islamic Revolution of Iran (1979), he was active in Yazd through speeches as well as guiding revolutionary activities.[5] Sayyid Muhammad Khatami, the fifth president of Iran, is his son.[6]

Khatami was a descendant of Imam al-Hasan al-Mujtaba (a).[7] He was born in 1906-07 in Ardakan, Yazd.[8] He learned the preliminaries of religious sciences from his father and went to Isfahan to continue his education.[9] He attended the lessons of Rahim Arbab, Sayyid Muhammad Fisharaki, and Mirza Ali Aqa Shirazi, receiving permission for Ijtihad from Fisharaki.[10] He then returned to Ardakan and engaged in promoting Islam.[11]

Two books, Āyina-yi makārim (a commentary on the Supplication of Makarim al-Akhlaq) and Rūza-yi rāstīn (a commentary on the supplications of the days of Ramadan), are among his works.[12] Khatami passed away in 1988 in Tehran and was buried in Ardakan.[13]
