Cause of War
On the cause of the Battle of Mu'ta, al-Waqidi writes: the Prophet (s) sent Harith b. 'Umayr al-Azdi al-Lahabi with a letter to the king of Busra. On his way to Busra, he was captured and killed in Mu'ta by the orders of the ruler of Mu'ta, Shurahbil b. 'Amr al-Ghassani. He was the only emissary of the Prophet (s) who was killed. The Prophet (s) heard the news and mobilized people. It seems that he asked them to gather in an army camp without having chosen a commander yet.

:* And if you besieged people of a fort or a city and they ask you to put them under the protection (Dhimma) of God and the Prophet (s), then reject their request; instead, put them under the protection of your own, and your father, and your companions, since if they violate the protection treaty of you and your fathers, that would be better than violating that of God and his messenger.

Then the Prophet (s) accompanied the Army of Islam to Thaniyyat al-Wada'; he then stayed there and the army stood around him. The Prophet (s) told them: "Depart in the name of God and fight the enemy of God and your enemy in Sham. You will see people who worship God in their monasteries; do not encroach upon them, and you will see people whose heads are Satan's nests; decapitate their heads with swords… Never kill women, children and the elderly; never set palm groves to fire; never cut trees, and never destroy houses".

After 'Abd Allah b. Rawaha bid farewell to the Prophet (s), he told him: "O' the messenger of God, please give me a piece of advice so that I can remember it all the time". The Prophet (s) told him: "You will soon enter a land where God little be worshipped, so try to perform more sajda (it means do more salat and worship)", and then the Prophet (s) said nothing. 'Abd Allah asked him to say more; the Prophet (s) said: "remember God all the time; He helps you in whatever you want". 'Abd Allah went away, but he returned again and said: "O' the Prophet, God is odd (in number) and he loves the odd numbers! So please add another piece of advice to get an odd number of it!" The Prophet (s) said: "O' the son of Rawaha! If you fail to do anything, do not fail to do at least one good deed in case you have done ten bad deeds". 'Abd Allah b. Rawaha said: "I do not ask you anything more", and then he left.

The Muslims went out of Medina and they camped in Wadi l-Qura. The enemy learned about their path. The ruler of Mu'ta, Shurahbil b. 'Amr al-Ghassani, the murderer of Harith b. 'Umayr al-Azdi al-Lahabi, gathered his army and equipment, and then he sent the pioneers of his army to fight the Muslims under the commandership of his brother, Sadus, who was killed in the fight. Shurahbil sent another brother of his, Wabar, to command the army, but he feared the army of Muslims and refuged to the fort.
