Who is Hussain? is a social justice movement founded in 2012 in London. Their main goal is to spread awareness about the life and legacy of Imam Husayn (a), who was the third Imam of the Shi'a. This organization carries out various initiatives such as blood donation campaigns, distributing posters, providing drinking water, and donating food and clothing packages to people in need in different cities worldwide.

The members of this group work with the organization on a voluntary basis. According to their website, representatives from the organization are currently active in over 90 cities worldwide to organize charitable events.

Imam al-Husayn b. Ali (a)

Al-Husayn b. Ali b. Abi Talib (a) (Martyrdom: Muharram 10, 61/October 10, 680) also known as Sayyid al-Shuhada', the third Imam of the Shi'a was martyred in the Battle of Karbala after ten years of Imamate. He was the second son of Imam Ali (a) and Lady Fatima (a), and the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (s). The imamate of Imam al-Husayn (a) coincided with the autocracy of Mu'awiya. When Mu'awiya introduced Yazid as his successor, Imam al-Husayn (a) refused to pledge allegiance to him, calling him unfit for leadership, and proclaimed himself the rightful leader of the ummah. As a result, the Battle of Karbala took place on the Day of 'Ashura'. Imam (a) along with a handful of his companions (around seventy-two) were martyred and the remaining companions were taken as captives to Kufa and Syria.

Objectives and Significance of the Organization

The Who is Hussain organization aims to inspire individuals through the timeless example of Imam Husayn (a) and the values he stood for: compassion, justice, and dignity.[1] Another objective of this organization is to make a positive change in society through giving back to those most in need.[2]

The members of this group work with the organization on a voluntary basis,[3] intending to present Imam Husayn (a) to the world solely based on the shared humanity of all individuals, irrespective of gender, nationality, or social class.[4] These organization members come from diverse races, nationalities, and religions.[5]

In August 2022, British Muslim charity has broken the world record for the largest number of blood donations in one day. The world record attempt coincided with Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, which is especially significant for Muslims who commemorate the legacy of Imam al-Husayn (a), the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad (s). The volunteer-run world record effort was led in August by Who Is Hussain, a social justice charity that worked with NHS Blood and Transplant, as well as the Imam Hussain Blood Donation Campaign, one of the country’s oldest Muslim blood donation organizations. As part of the campaign, called #GlobalBloodHeroes, blood donation centers across the UK – and dozens of other centers in 27 countries including Argentina, Iraq, and Thailand – collected blood from more than 37,000 people. Donations began at a centers in New Zealand and concluded in the US.[15].[16]

Authenticated by the official world records, the total number of blood donations was 37,018, beating the previous record of 34,723 set in 2020. According to NHS Blood and Transplant, one donation can help to save or improve the lives of up to three people, which means more than 110,000 lives could be saved or improved by the British charity’s efforts.[17].[18]
