Masjid al-Ijāba (Arabic: مسجد الإجابة), also known as Masjid al-Istirāḥa or Masjid Āl Qunfudh, is an old Mosque in Mecca. There is no specific mention of the reason for naming the mosque "al-Ijaba" (The Answer), but it is narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (s) prayed in this mosque, and it is considered one of the mosques where supplications are answered.

Masjid al-Ijaba remained a ruin for centuries, with occasional repairs, until it was rebuilt in 898/1492-3, taking on the form and appearance of a mosque. Subsequently, it was renovated or rebuilt in various years. The current structure of the mosque covers an area of 400 square meters, and the neighborhood is also known as al-Ijaba.

History and Significance

Masjid al-Ijaba is an ancient mosque in Mecca. It is narrated that the Prophet (s) prayed in it,[1] and it is among the mosques where supplications are answered.[2] Some also believe that the final verses of Qur'an 15 were revealed to the Prophet (s) at this location.[3]

According to the text of an inscription located next to its Mihrab, 'Abd Allah Jamali is mentioned as the builder of the mosque, having rebuilt it on Sunday, Safar 11, 898/December 2, 1492.[4]

Names

No information has been found regarding the naming of the mosque. However, it is clear that the mosque was not historically famous as "al-Ijaba". The book Akhbar Makka, written in the 3rd/9th century, refers to it as "Masjid Al Qunfudh" because it was situated next to a valley known as Shi'b Al Qunfudh.[5]

Another name for it is "Masjid al-Istiraḥa" (The Mosque of Rest). It is famously said that the Prophet (s) rested there upon his return from Umrah or Hajjat al-Wada', or that he would spend the days in the Cave of Hira and the nights with Lady Khadija (a) in this place.[6] Some reports mention that Jinns met with the Prophet (s) at this location, or that the Messenger of God (s) used to graze sheep there during his childhood.[7]

Renovations

Renovations of the mosque have taken place from the past up to recent years. The book Itḥaf al-wara states that Masjid al-Ijaba was repaired in 720/1320-1,[8] after which it fell into disrepair and ruin,[9] until 831/1427-8 when Amir Sayf al-Din Shahin ʿUthmani restored it again.[10]

Additionally, according to another inscription next to the Mihrab, Sultan Ahmed rebuilt the mosque in 1124/1712-3, and Shaykh Baṣri did so in 1134/1721-2.[11] In 1394/1974, the old structure of the mosque was completely demolished, and a new mosque was built on the same site.[12] Masjid al-Ijaba was rebuilt in 1421/2000-1 following its latest renovation, featuring beautiful white and dark stones.[13]

Current Status

Masjid al-Ijaba is located on the route to Masjid al-Haram, below al-Maʿabida Square, at the beginning of al-Abtah Street. The neighborhood is also known as al-Ijaba. The current building of the mosque has an area of 400 square meters, and the signboard of Masjid al-Ijaba is installed on it.[14]
