Mourning Ritual of Noghan Women (Persian: سوگواره زنان نوغان) is a religious ritual in Mashhad held annually by women on the martyrdom anniversary of Imam al-Rida (a).[1] This ceremony begins in the Noghan neighborhood and ends at the Razavi Shrine, symbolizing women's loyalty to the Ahl al-Bayt (a) and their social role in mourning ceremonies.[2]

According to common belief, the women of Noghan waived their dowries after the martyrdom of Imam al-Rida (a) to obtain permission from their husbands to attend his funeral procession.[3] In this ritual, women carry a symbolic coffin and move toward the shrine while reciting Noha and reading Ziyara-text.[4] Some researchers believe that the story of waiving the Mahr and the presence of Noghan women at Imam al-Rida's (a) funeral lacks definitive historical evidence and is based more on oral tradition.[5]

Noghan was one of the four main districts of ancient Tus[6] located near Sanabad[7] which gained special status after the burial of Imam al-Rida (a).[8] There is currently a neighborhood named Noghan in the city of Mashhad.[9]
