Qur'an 3:92 identifies the truly righteous individual as one who[1] gives from that which they love.[2] According to this verse, Infaq must involve one's best possessions to enable the benefactor to attain the pinnacle of righteousness.[3] This characteristic is regarded as a defining attribute of the Abrar (the righteous).[4]

Scholars maintain that the path to the station of the righteous lies in sincere Infaq of cherished assets; consequently, worldly attachment is viewed as an impediment to achieving the station of Birr (righteousness).[5] The exegesis Manhaj al-sadiqin asserts that a human being attains the essence of goodness, divine satisfaction, and Paradise solely by expending that which is beloved.[6]

Interpretations regarding the precise meaning of the term "Birr" in this verse vary.[7] Some posit that it denotes Paradise,[8] implying that one cannot enter Paradise without giving away what one loves.[9] Others have defined "Birr" as obedience to God, goodness, Taqwa, or the status of the Abrar.[10] However, the apparent meaning of the verse suggests that the concept of "Birr" is comprehensive, encompassing all such meanings.[11] Based on the concluding clause—"and whatever you may spend of anything, Allah indeed knows it"—it is understood that Infaq yields rewards in both this world and the Hereafter, and does not constitute a waste of property.[12]

In their commentary on this verse, some exegetes have cited the instance of Lady Fatima al-Zahra (a) giving Infaq on her wedding night.[13] The Prophet of Islam (s) had purchased a new dress for Lady Fatima (a) to wear for the occasion. Following the ceremony, a beggar asked for food and clothing, prompting Lady Fatima (a) to give away the very dress she had worn at the wedding. She subsequently recited the verse: "You will never attain piety until you spend out of what you hold dear."[14]
