Verse 6 of Sūra Ibrāhīm (Arabic:آية 6 من سورة إبراهيم) (Qur'an 14:6) refers to the trial of Banu Isra'il and their rescue from Pharaoh's people. According to this verse, Moses (a) reminded his people to recall the oppressions of Pharaoh, when they tortured them, slaughtered their sons, and took their daughters into captivity and slavery.[1]

According to Nasir Makarim Shirazi, the author of Tafsir-i nimuna, in (Qur'an 14:5) , God refers to the "Ayyam Allah" (Days of God), and in the following verse, He introduces the rescue of the people of Moses (a) as one of its instances;[2] because on these days, truth triumphed over falsehood.[3] The content of Verse 6 of Sura Ibrahim is also repeated in Qur'an 2:49 and Qur'an 7:141, and this repetition indicates the importance of paying attention to and reminding oneself of Divine blessings.[4] According to Abd Allah Jawadi Amuli, the author of Tafsir Tasnim, Pharaoh imposed various punishments on the people of Moses (a), but the slaughtering of sons is mentioned as a specific punishment.[5]

Some Shi'a exegetes believe that God saved Banu Isra'il by destroying the Pharaonic ideology and replacing it with a system of justice;[6] therefore, the rescue of the people of Moses (a) from Pharaoh's domination is considered one of the greatest blessings upon Banu Isra'il.[7] Allamah Tabataba'i, in Tafsir al-mizan, states that in this verse, God commands the Prophet (s) to recount the story of the rescue of the people of Moses (a) so that his faith in God becomes more steadfast.[8]

According to some exegetes, in this event, the people of Moses (a) were tested through patience in the face of Pharaoh's oppression and gratitude for the blessing of rescue,[9] and Pharaoh's people were tested through their power and domination.[10] Reminding oneself of Divine blessings is one of the most prominent manifestations of gratitude. One who knows that blessings come from God strives to attract His satisfaction so that the blessings are not taken away from him.[11]

Jawadi Amuli considers the role of freedom and independence as fundamental in the destiny of nations and regards it as a great blessing bestowed upon Banu Isra'il, because liberation from tyranny makes the acceptance of the doctrinal, ethical, and behavioral teachings of the Prophets (a) possible.[12] Makarim Shirazi considers remembering difficult days and the liberation from them effective in the awakening of nations[13] and believes that this subject must remain in the minds of the people to prevent a return to the era of oppression.[14] According to Rida'i Isfahani, a Shi'a Quranic scholar, the Pharaohs used to eliminate the effective forces of the society.[15]
