Related VersesQur'an 17:26

Qur'an 17:27 characterizes practitioners of Tabdhir (squandering) as the "brothers of devils" (shayāṭīn) and describes Satan as ungrateful to God.[1] According to commentators, this verse functions as a continuation of Qur'an 17:26, which mandates the fulfillment of obligations toward kinsmen and the needy while prohibiting wastefulness and extravagance.[2] Consequently, the verse emphasizes that believers must avoid such wastefulness, as those who squander bear a resemblance to Satan in his ingratitude.[3]

Translators have offered varying interpretations regarding the specific terminology for squandering used in the verse.[4] Renderings include extravagance (isrāf),[5] destruction or wasting (itlāf),[6] reckless spending or scattering (rīkht-u-pāsh) in illicit manners,[7] overindulgence,[8] and spendthriftness (vulkharjī).[9]

Muhammad Jawad Mughniyya defines squandering (tabdhīr) as the expenditure of wealth in inappropriate contexts.[10] According to Makarim Shirazi, if wealth is utilized for its proper purpose, it does not constitute squandering, regardless of the magnitude of the expense.[11] Bahrani interprets squandering as any consumption of wealth that deviates from divine obedience.[12] Makarim Shirazi further explains that the phrase "brothers of devils" alludes to extravagant individuals who either align themselves with the work of Satan or are destined to accompany him in Hell.[13][14] Allama Tabataba'i elucidates the distinction between the plural shayāṭīn (devils) and the singular shayṭān (Satan); he posits that the former refers to the wasteful individuals themselves, while the latter denotes Satan as the progenitor or archetype of devils.[15]
