AboutMockery of believers by criminals

Qur'an 83:30 expresses the attitude of criminals, that when they passed by believers, they mocked them by gesturing to one another.[1] "Yataghamazun" means fault-finding with gestures of the eyes and hands, and is sometimes used for any kind of fault-finding.[2]

This verse expresses the second instance of the attitude of criminals and disbelievers which is mentioned under Qur'an 83:29 to 31.[3] In Qur'an 83:29, it speaks of criminals laughing at believers. In Qur'an 83:30, it says that when believers passed by disbelievers, they mocked the believers with gestures of their eyes and eyebrows.[4] Qur'an 83:31 mentions another instance, that when they went to their families, they rejoiced over what they had done.[5] Finally, in Qur'an 83:32, it mentions the fourth instance, that when they saw the believers, they called them astray.[6] God reminds in Qur'an 83:33 that disbelievers are not the guardians of believers to want to taunt them. Disbelievers better be busy with their own actions.[7]

Two causes of revelation have been narrated for Qur'an 83:30 and its preceding and following verses:

Some Shi'a and Sunni exegetes have narrated that Imam 'Ali (a) was passing by a place along with a number of Muslims when hypocrites saw them, laughed at them, and mocked them. Then they went to their friends and said, "We saw the bald one (asla')," and laughed. Then these verses of Sura al-Mutaffifin were revealed. Some exegetes have considered the probability of the verse's revelation due to this cause to be stronger.[8]

There were some companions of the Prophet of Islam, such as 'Ammar and Bilal, who were subjected to mockery and ridicule by polytheists such as Abu Jahl and al-Walid b. al-Mughira, for which these verses were revealed.[9]
