Zainabia Islamic Society (Pomona)
The Zainabia Islamic Society is a non-profit Shia organization, working to promote Shia school of thought and to serve the Shia Muslim residents of the Pomona, CA, in their religious and ritual life.[1]
History
The Zainabia Islamic Society was founded in the l990s as an informal group of a few Shia Muslim families of Pakistani-Indian descent living in the Inland Empire and adjacent areas to commemorate Muharram and perform other religious and cultural activities. It was incorporated as a non-profit religious corporation in the State of California on July 15, l993.
During the first twelve years of its existence, all of the programs were held at the Church of Religious Science in Claremont with whom they had established an interfaith relationship and dialogue.
Today, the Zainabia Islamic Society is housed in a 6000 square foot building on a 30,000 square foot lot in the city of Pomona, California. This building was purchased in 2005 when the membership of the society had peaked to 200 families.
Programs
Most of the programs of Zainabia Islamic Society are religious congregational rituals, such as congregational prayer, du'a ceremonies, Qur'an recitation and Tafsir sessions, and celebration of Islamic holidays such as Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr. It has also special programs in the months of Muharram and Ramadan.
