Asfal al-Sāfilīn (Arabic: أَسْفَلُ سافِلین) literally means "the lowest of the low." The phrase appears in Qur'an 95 "We have certainly created man in the best of stature; Then We return him to the lowest of the low."[1] There are disagreements over the meaning of the phrase:
- Some Qur'anic exegetes interpret it as the fire of the Hell. The verse points to the lowest degree or level of punished people. It has also been interpreted as the seventh level of the Hell, which is the lowest of all levels.
- Some exegetes interpret the phrase as the period of old age and senility.
