AboutEffects of gratitude for blessings and ingratitude for blessings

Qur'an 14:7 serves as a definitive scriptural reference within the Quran regarding the profound impact of gratitude versus ingratitude for divine blessings.[1] The verse establishes gratitude as the catalyst for the continuity and augmentation of favors,[2] while identifying ingratitude as the precipitant of severe divine retribution.[3]

According to Mughniyya, the "increase" mentioned in the verse signifies the abundance of blessings in the Hereafter.[4] Imam al-Sadiq (a) defined true gratitude as abstaining from forbidden (ḥarām) acts and reciting "al-hamdu lillah rabb al-'alamin" (Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds).[5] Another narration reports that whenever God bestows a blessing upon a servant, if that servant inwardly acknowledges it and verbally praises God, the Divine command for an increase in blessings is issued even before the speech is concluded.[6]

Exegetes clarify that the term kufr in this context denotes ingratitude for blessings rather than theological disbelief or irreligiousness.[7] Such ingratitude may manifest as negligence in thankfulness,[8] the misuse of blessings, or their employment in the commission of sin.[9] The consequence of such ingratitude is the diminution or forfeiture of the blessing,[10] with the retribution becoming significantly more severe after Death.[11]

Mulla Sadra ascribes the use of the expression la-azidannakum ("I will surely increase for you")—rather than a phrase like "I will surely punish you" for the ungrateful—to Divine benevolence and the gracious rhetoric inherent in God's address.[12] Furthermore, scholars suggest that the employment of allusion rather than explicit threat reflects the etiquette of Divine speech.[13] Sayyid Ali Khamenei, defining Divine Sunna as an immutable law, identifies this verse as encapsulating two such divine ordinances: if gratitude is demonstrated, the result is the promise of increase (la-azidannakum); conversely, if ingratitude prevails—whether through neglect, poor use, or misuse of blessings—the warning that "indeed My punishment is severe" applies.[14]

Regarding the verse's intended audience, exegetes proffer two primary interpretations: first, that the address is universal, directed at all of humanity.[15] The second possibility posits that the verse, like those preceding it, continues the discourse of Moses (a) to the Bani Isra'il,[16] reminding them of God's proclamation.[17] However, commentators note that even if the words originate from Moses (a), the verse articulates a general rule and a divine sunna,[18] serving as a foundational pedagogical principle within the Quran.[19]

Scholars have delineated various stages of gratitude: initially, cognitive awareness of the Benefactor;[20] subsequently, verbal acknowledgement, such as reciting "al-hamdu lillah";[21] and finally, practical application, which entails utilizing blessings in the path of obedience to God.[22]

It is narrated from Imam Ali (a) regarding the continuity of favors: "When the vanguard of blessings reaches you, do not sever their continuation through ingratitude."[23] Additionally, a famous couplet attributed to Rumi, which serves as a poetic interpretation of Qur'an 14:7, has achieved proverbial status:[24] Template:Poem
