Qur'an 62:5 likens the Jewish scholars who did not act according to the teachings of the Torah to a donkey that does not understand anything of the knowledge and wisdom of the books it carries.[1] According to Nasir Makarim Shirazi, this verse is one of the Qur'anic parables about the Jews at the time of the Prophet (s) who, despite the explicit mention of the prophethood of the Prophet of Islam in their own heavenly book, did not convert to the religion of Islam and became instances of unpracticing scholars.[2]

| “ | The example of those who were charged with the Torah, then failed to carry it, is that of an ass carrying books. Evil is the example of the people who deny Allah's signs, and Allah does not guide the wrongdoing lot.

According to exegetes, Qur'an 62:5 and the next three verses of this sura are about blaming worldly Jews.[3] Based on some narrations, the Jews used to say that the religion of Muhammad (s) does not include us; therefore, the Qur'an reminds them that if they had read their heavenly book carefully and acted upon it, they would not have said this; because the glad tidings of the emergence of the Prophet of Islam are mentioned in it.[4]
Imam Khomeini has raised the aforementioned verse as a reminder to distinguish unpracticing and corrupt scholars from practicing, committed, and guided scholars.[5] Husayn Mazaheri, a Shi'a jurist, considering the belief in the embodiment of actions, believes that this verse indicates that in the Resurrection, unpracticing scholars will enter the gathering place in the shape of a donkey.[6] According to al-Shaykh al-Tusi, the peoples about whom this example is mentioned are bad peoples who deny divine verses, prophets, and clear proofs.[7]
Qur'an 62:5 has been reflected in Persian poems. 'Ali Akbar Dihkhuda in the book Amthal wa hikam brings several lines of poetry and considers them derived from this very verse: among them these lines by Sa'di: Template:Poem These lines by Rumi are also considered to be referring to this verse: Template:Poem Salman Savaji has also composed: Template:Poem
