Mawsūʿat ṭabaqāt al-fuqahāʾ(Arabic: موسوعَةُ طَبَقاتِ الفُقَهاء) is an Arabic encyclopedia that provides introductions to 5,976 scholars of Islamic jurisprudence belonging to various Islamic sects. The compilation covers the period until the end of the 14th/20th century. Ja'far Subhani (b. 1929), a Shia religious authority, and a group of writers co-authored this book.

It is among the selected works in The I.R. Iran’s Book of The Year Award. The book's notable features include providing biographical accounts, scholarly activities, and historical events during the era of each jurist, distinguishing between homonymous jurists, and straightforwardly presenting information without excessive embellishment. The book consists of sixteen volumes, divided into two parts. The first part contains a two-volume introduction, while the second comprises fourteen main content volumes. The first volume of the second part covers the jurists of the time of the Prophet (s) and Tabi'un. The subsequent volumes (2-14) introduce the jurists of the second/eighth through the fourteenth/twentieth centuries. Each book is dedicated to introducing the jurists of a specific century.

Importance

In the seventeenth I.R. Iran's National Award for The Book of The Year in 2000, Mawsu'at tabaqat al-fuqaha was honored as the selected work in the field of religion.[1] Ja'far Subhani (b. 1929), a Shia religious authority, and a group of writers co-authored this book.

According to Ja'far Subhani, Contrary to works that only cover scholars from specific sects, this book includes biographies of Islamic scholars from all denominations.[2] The book covers early Islamic jurists up to the 14th/20th century in fourteen volumes, each dedicated to introducing the jurists of a specific century.[3]

Authors

Mawsu'at tabaqat al-fuqaha has been authored by a group of researchers of the scholarly team of Imam Sadiq (a) Institute in Qom. They are: Sayyid Muhammad Husayn Mudarrisi Yazdi, Sayyid Muhammad Kadim Mudarrisi Yazdi, Sayyid Muhammad Kadim Hakimzada, Haydar Muhammad al-Baghdadi, Sayyid Ahmad Fadili, Yahya Sadiqi, Qasim Shirzada, and Muhammad al-Shuwayli.[4] The book's detailed introduction was written by Ja'far Subhani, who also supervised the team.[5]

Features

The book has several notable features, including:

  1. The book covers the jurists from all Islamic denominations, including those that have disappeared over time.
  2. It distinguishes between jurists with identical names and titles and identifies errors in bibliographies and rijal works, citing reasons.
  3. The book provides detailed biographies of jurists, describing their scholarly activities and the historical events of their time.
  4. The jurists are presented alphabetically in each volume, with an alphabetical index and a list of jurists organized by year of passing at the end of each book.
  5. The writing style is straightforward and free from overwriting or excessive detailing.[6]

Content

The book has sixteen volumes, divided into two parts. The first has a two-volume introduction, while the second has fourteen main content volumes[7] documenting the biographies of 5,976 Islamic jurists until the end of the 14th/20th century. The introduction has been written by Ja'far Subhani[8], and the topics addressed in it include:

  • The first volume of the introduction, which has six chapters:

Chapter One: The valid sources of Islamic law, including the Qur'an, Sunna, consensus, Intellect, 'Urf (Common Sense), and conduct.

Chapter Two: Sunni Muslims' sources of Islamic law.

Chapter Three: The Role of Time and Place in Ijtihad (deduction of the Islamic laws from its sources)

Chapter Four: Hadith heritage of Shia and Sunni

Chapter Five: Jurisprudential heritage of Shia and Sunni

Chapter Six: The History of Principles of Jurisprudence in Shia and Sunni[9]

  • The second volume of the introduction covers the introductory section and the periods of jurisprudence in Shia and Sunni traditions.

The first volume of the book's main content focuses on the jurists who were among the Companions of the Prophet (s) and Tabi'un.[10] Subsequently, from the second to the fourteenth volume, each volume introduces the jurists of a distinct century, covering jurists from the second/eighth to the fourteenth/twentieth century.[11]
