Muḥammad ʿAlī Muwaḥḥidī Kirmānī (Persian: محمدعلی موحدی کرمانی) (b. 1931-32) is the Chairman of the Assembly of Experts and the Secretary-General of the Combatant Clergy Association. He is considered one of the clerics and political activists both before and after the Islamic Revolution of Iran. After the revolution, he assumed numerous responsibilities, including: representing the Assembly of Experts for six terms and chairing it since 2024, serving as the Secretary-General of the Combatant Clergy Association, acting as the interim chairman of the Expediency Discernment Council, and being a Temporary Friday Prayer Leader of Tehran.

Muwahhidi completed his seminary education in Kerman, Qom, Najaf, and Mashhad, benefiting from masters such as Ayatollah Burujirdi, Imam Khomeini, al-Hakim, al-Khoei, and Milani. Before the revolution, Muwahhidī was active against the Pahlavi regime in Kerman and Tehran. After the victory of the Islamic Revolution of Iran, Muwahhidi Kirmani became the Friday Prayer Leader of Bakhtaran (Kermanshah) by the decree of Imam Khomeini, succeeding 'Ata' Allah Ashrafi Isfahani. During that period, which accompany with the Iran-Iraq War, he was continuously present at the war fronts.

Introduction and Position

Muhammad 'Ali Muwahhidi Kirmani is the Chairman of the Assembly of Experts and the Secretary-General of the Combatant Clergy Association.[1] Before the Revolution, he was active against the Pahlavi regime in Kerman and Tehran,[2] and after the revolution, he assumed numerous responsibilities.[3]

After studying in Qom, Najaf, and Mashhad, Muwahhidi Kirmani returned to Kerman and was active against the Pahlavi regime for several years.[4] In 1969, he went to Tehran and engaged in propagation and party activities at the invitation of Muhammad Javad Bahonar in the Muslim b. 'Aqil Mosque.[5] According to himself, he was a member of the central council of the Combatant Clergy Association and the secretary of the association in East Tehran, and was also a member of the Islamic Republic Party.[6]

In Kerman, due to his activities and speeches against the Pahlavi regime, Muwahhidi was caused by SAVAK and banned from the pulpit (mamnuʿ al-minbar),[7] and in 1964, he was banned from the platfrom again for the same reason.[8] From 1965, he had permission for Hisbiyya Affairs from Imam Khomeini(r)[9] and was detained for about two months before the revolution.[10] In early 1978, Muwahhidī went to Iraq and had several private meetings with the Imam,[11] in which he presented the program of the Combatant Clergy Association and conveyed important instructions for the association and the Islamic Republic Party.[12]

With the victory of the Islamic Revolution, Muwahhidī became one of the officials of the Islamic Republic in various responsibilities.[13] During the Iran-Iraq War, when he was the Friday Prayer Leader of Bakhtaran (Kermanshah), he was continuously present at the fronts and had a close relationship with the combatants.[14]

Academic Biography

Muhammad 'Ali Muwahhidi Kirmani, son of Shaykh 'Abbas, one of the famous clergyman of Kerman, was born in Kerman in 1931.[23] He completed his preliminary seminary studies in Kerman[24] and went to Qom in 1946. In Qom, he benefited from masters such as Sayyid Husayn Tabataba'i Burujirdi, Sayyid Muhammad Muhaqqiq Damad, Imam Khomeini, and Muhammad Ali Araki.[25] In 1956, he went to Najaf and attended the lessons of Sayyid Muhsin al-Tabataba'i al-Hakim, al-Sayyid Abu l-Qasim al-Khoei, Sayyid Mahmud Shahrudi, and Mirza Hashim Amuli.[26] Muwaḥḥidī Kirmānī also attended the lessons of Sayyid Muhammad Hadi Milani in Mashhad for a short time.[27] Hashimi Rafsanjani, Rabbani Amlashi, Muṭahhari, Bihishti, Muhammad Mu'min Qummi, Jannati, Tahiri Khurramabadi, and Mahdavi Kani are among his classmates and close friends.[28]
