The exact date of his birth is unknown. It is said that he was born in early 3rd/9th century. There is some evidence that supports this report.[1]

His Family

His father, al-Rayyan b. al-Salt al-Ash'ari al-Qummi, is one of the eminent Shi'a Muhaddiths. Mentioning al-Rayyan b. al-Salt, al-Shaykh al-Tusi says, "he was a companion of Imam al-Rida (a) and a reliable and renowned figure."[2] He also explicitly says that he was a companion of Imam al-Hadi (a) and apparently was from Baghdad originally.[3]

Ali b. al-Rayyan had a brother named Muhammad who was also a Shi'a narrator. Al-Najashi says, "Muhammad b. al-Rayyan b. al-Salt al-Ash'ari al-Qummi has a book titled as al-Masa'il that he has narrated from Imam Hasan al-'Askari (a)."[4] Al-Shaykh al-Tusi counted him among the reliable (Thiqa) Shi'a narrators.[5]
