'Aziz of Egypt or Putiphar (Potiphar) is a title which, in the context of pre-Islamic Egypt, denoted a high-ranking dignitary, such as a prime minister, the king's grand vizier, or the commander of military forces and court retinue.[1] In the Torah, he is identified as the captain of the guard, the chief of security forces, and the official overseeing the prison; this authority was conferred upon him directly by the King of Egypt.[2] While some interpretations suggest that the 'Aziz was the Pharaoh himself, this view has been rejected by other scholars.[3]
The term 'Aziz appears in Qur'an 12:30, 12:51, 12:78, and 12:88; however, none of these verses explicitly define the specific office or rank associated with the title.
The wife of the 'Aziz of Egypt was Zulaykha, whose narrative involving the Prophet Joseph (a) is recounted in the Qur'an.[4]
In the Prophet Joseph series, directed by Farajullah Salahshur and broadcast in the Islamic Republic of Iran, the character of Putiphar ('Aziz of Egypt) was portrayed by Jafar Dehghan.
