Qur'an 4:110 emphasizes that anyone who commits a sin or wrongs themselves, if they repent and seek forgiveness from God, will find God forgiving and merciful toward them.

| “ | Whoever commits evil or wrongs himself and then pleads to Allah for forgiveness, will find Allah all-forgiving, all-merciful.

According to exegetes, Qur'an 4:110 is at the beginning of three verses that address sin and its consequences. This verse refers to the possibility of forgiveness for sins, and in the next two verses, it addresses the effect of sin on the sinner and the incorrectness of blaming others for one's sins.[1] The Qur'an threatened traitors in the previous verse and opens the way for repentance in this verse[2] to prevent wrongdoers from despairing of God's mercy.[3] Sayyida Nusrat Amin believes that the structure of the verse is such that it shows the acceptance of repentance by God is God's grace, not the merit of the repenter.[4] 'Allama Tabataba'i also believes that the order of the words "su'" (evil) and "zulm" (wronging oneself) means progress from minor sins to major sins.[5]

"God is never such as to open the door of supplication and close the gate of response; for He says: 'Call Me, I will respond to you' and He is never such as to open the door of repentance and close the gate of forgiveness, while He Himself says: 'Whoever commits evil or wrongs himself and then pleads to Allah for forgiveness, will find Allah all-forgiving, all-merciful.'" |

Nasir Makarem Shirazi believes that Qur'an 4:110 expresses the fact that any type of sin, whether wronging oneself or others, is forgivable upon true repentance and compensation.[6]
Some exegetes believe that from the phrase "will find Allah all-forgiving, all-merciful," it is understood that true repentance leaves a sweet effect and a pleasant experience in the soul of the repenter.[7]
